Mexico City transportation

->> Does anyone have any experience using the Mexico City subway/rail system? I'm about to make my quadrennial trip to Mexico City, and I'm considering taking the subway from the airport to my hotel - and back a couple of days later.

I assume it's relatively modern and safe for a traveling photog. My main concern is that it'll be Seoul "City of a Thousand staircases" South Korea all over again with me humping my camera gear up and down and up and down and up and down stairs.

Any experience or recommendations is welcome

->> Subways there are fine. I haven't been to Seoul, but don't remember Mexico City's as being too dissimilar to the ones in Paris or NYC regarding stairways. Just use the same precautions you would in any megacity subway. You can use a lock on your backpack, but you're better off wearing it in front, to discourage box cutter slash and grabbers.

->> It's one of the best metro systems in the world. And it goes right to the airport. Yes there are staircases on the system, but no more that a flight at a time. And, at about 20 cents, it is also the cheapest option. Like in any big city, just make sure you put you backpack on forward, your wallet in your front pocket, and have your suitcase between your legs when riding the train, to avoid getting robbed.

When I go to Mexico City, I always use the system to get to and from the airport, not to mention, to get just about everywhere else.

And definitely try the taco stand on Bolivar street in El Centro. Some of the best tacos in Mexico.
