Kudos Canon service

->> Just wanted to send my Kudos to Canon Factory service in NJ
I will say up front I am a CPS platinium member.
Not sure if it made a difference or not. But I know that when people have bad service they let everyone know. My expirence however is all good. I sent my Mklll in for free clean and check on a monday night in the first part of July. I sent it overnight to NJ and Canon looked at it found a problem ( replaced mirror box among other things) and I had it back in my hands in Ohio Thursday of the SAME week. they also included the clean and check certificate back so that I could use it again all of this at no charge. I thought great, but maybe a fluke so I sent 2 MKlln in Tuesday of this week for free clean and checks. Got them both back on Thursday ready to go. Thanks Canon for the GREAT service !!!!!!!!!!
I am not trying say every service will be this good but my two expirences were very very good.

P.S. thanks to Duane Burleson for having current repair form availble for download

The girl at the counter said 5-10 business days before I handed her my CPS card. She then said "You will have it by the end of the week"

The grip on my 5D II was loose and the screw holding it on was stripped. walked it into Irvine thinking I'd have it back in a couple days and they called me like 4 hours later to come and pick it up. wow, that was fast. I was impressed.

->> Don, based on your overall experience, you think the $500.00 per year for Platinum membership is worth it?

I'm a gold member and when I wanted to borrow a camera and lens a few weeks ago I was turned down because I had to make my request two weeks in advance. I didn't know two weeks before that I might want to borrow any equipment. It took a platinum membership to get it to me quicker.

Under the old CPS, I've always had great turn around when servicing my cameras so I have no complaints in that department and I rarely borrowed equipment. Its just that, for me, the rare time I wanted to borrow something, the new CPS membership didn't work out. I'm sure the loan program is written in the fine print somewhere and I didn't pay attention to it. I'm curious, is all.

My buddy, a retired engineer, that is neither a Full Time Professional Photographer, not he derives ANY of his income from Photography got accepted to CPS. Just because of the Gear he owned!! The Full time working Photographer clause is not that strictly enforced. Pretty much anyone that owns the required Canon Gear can join.

Yeah, that part of the CPS saga sucks...I sent them a nastygram about it...didn't change anything...

->> Steven - Do I think the $500 dollars was worth it??
That is a very good question!!!
First let me say upfront I think that is an individual decision. I would never tell someone how to spend their money. That being said I will try and explain why I will renew my platinum membership.
I have had Canon equipment for a little over 3 years. I was with Nikon before that for 20 years and had used NPS loaner program and service several times. While NPS was very responive to my needs in almost all cases. In 20 years I have never had repairs of any kind back to me in the SAME week and that includes repairs that did not need any parts. my expirence with NPS was an aveage 10-14 working days turnaround. That is not saying in any way that NPS was bad. It was just the only service I used then. We can debate all day whether the goodies that Canon sends with the different levels of membership ( think tank glass taxi- extra body caps-- Canon books, eye caps etc ) makes the money worth it or not. I have yet to use the loaner program so I can not speak to that. I only used the "old" CPS a couple of times with my MKlll because I had a very early one and was sent in for updates and it normally took about 7 working days to get it back each time. Again not bad about what I would expect based on my previous expirence with NPS. I do not know if CPS has ramped up service for the new CPS program or if the platinum version is really getting priority or not. I guess time will tell. I think it would be interesting to hear what other CPS service expirences at different membership levels was like. I think that would be to me a good way of answering you question.

->> Thanks, Don.

I was always satisfied with the repair service I had out of the Irvine office. I had stickers that moved my equipment to the front of the line and turnaround was within a week or less. I agree, however, it is an individual decision. When it comes time for me to renew CPS I will have to mull it over for its cost/benefit ratio.

->> CPS has been doing well lately, I had a 5D repaired a while back, had rain damage, 3 day turnaround.

A second problem with the body crept up the following week, may or may not have been related. Canon had a shipping label for me that day (Monday) the camera came back fixed on Wednesday afternoon, and no charge. Talk about fast.

->> I haven't seen this mentioned, but this could affect some out there...

Canon updated their equipment requirements for CPS, and now the 20D _is_ listed as an "accepted" body. Since my second and third bodies were 20Ds, this was the only thing holding me back from applying for the new program.

->> Is membership worth it? As a Gold Level ($100) member I can with out a doubt say membership is worth every penny. I made up for the cost of membership with the discount on just one repair, and I have had a few this year. I'm not sure if service could have been any faster either, my repairs have almost always been fixed and shipped the same day they were received.

->> I've literally sent dozens upon dozens of repair items to both Canon CPS and Nikon NPS over the last ten years. Canon CPS in Irvine, by far, seemed to have their act together. All repairs were handled and returned promptly and when they couldn't turn it around quickly, Chris or Jess called to update on the situation. They were fantastic to work with and made managing the repairs of a larger photo department that much easier.

Spoke with a tech Friday early afternoon for the shipping label, and I had the box at Fedex about an hour later. It was delivered to Canon this morning, cleaned, and I should have it Wednesday, if not tomorrow!

5 more coupons to go! Very happy. :)

I'm a staffer at a small paper, and do some contract work, so I can't afford all of the name brand stuff...I wish they hadn't changed.

->> CPS saved my butt the other week. The lens mount on my 400mm f2.8 IS broke on Saturday at a football game. I needed the lens fixed and returned to me by the next Saturday for a Notre Dame game. I shipped it off via Fed Ex for Tuesday delivery and had the lens back and fixed for only $200 by Friday afternoon. Here is the real kicker, I am only a Silver CPS member. Thats right, I paid nothing for my CPS membership.

Needless to say, I upgraded to Gold and was happy to give Canon $100!!
