Help with canon g10 raw files in windows explorer

->> I recently got a G10. I am running Windows XP. The RAW files from the G10 come up in Windows Explorer along with my 5D files. But I cannot see the thumbnails of the G10 images like I can the 5D in Windows Explorer. This is a hassle.

I checked the forum search function here at SS and came up dry. There is no Q&A for the G10. I searched Google and found what I thought was the solution - I needed a RAW Codec from Canon (ver 1.5.0)(

I downloaded and installed this but it did not help. I am sure that there is some little bit of software updating that I need to do but I am not having any luck finding it. I am hopeful that the good ol' trusty SS forum turns up someone that has already been thru this before and can show me the light. Thanks!

->> well... now not only do the G10 RAW files not show up as thumbnails in Windows Explorer but now the thumbnails from my 5dmkI files have disappeared too.

I am searching online for a fix but thought I'd see if others here had run into this.

->> Try using the Canon software that came with the camera. I had problems with an S3 several years ago, could see photos on camera and computer info SAID there was data but nothing would download. I used the disc that came with the camera and everything straightened out. Oh, and I never had to use the disc software again. Sounds weird but it worked.

->> Chuck are you speaking about "processing" RAW files or simply just seeing them as thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I have LR and DPP for processing and they work fine with the G10 once properly updated. I just can't get a folder of images to reveal G10 thumbnails in the explorer window in Windows XP. It is not the end of the world, but it is proving inconvenient with the way I sort images from my 5D.

->> My RAW files never show up in a windows folder. I'm pretty sure that since the .CR2 or .CRW types are propietary that windows doesn't know how to read them. open the folder in bridge, photomechanic or another software package that uses it's own software to interpret the raw file and you should be able to see the thumbnail.

->> Suspect what you need is this - http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/raw.aspx - Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP, in addition to the codec for the G10, which is here (if it's not the one you already installed) - http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx

Hope that helps,
R!

->> ArcSoft has a slick and free RAW viewer too:

I have used both the ArcSoft and Microsoft plug-ins successfully, but as far as I can tell neither will let you view larger-sized images in Filmstrip viewing mode. If anyone has a solution for that, I'd love to hear it.
