www.mainstreethost.com
The phoned today and tried to sell me on using their services to come up quicker in the Google search rankings.
Just checking them out before I hear the total sales pitch. I have been on Photoshelter and reading about SEO (Search engine optimization) and want to proceed with caution on this one.
thanks

->> How much where they looking at charging you? If you want better SEO right now, I would recommend that you put meta data in your website. You don't have any meta currently, but once you do your ranking should greatly increase in a few weeks.
Example meta data: Alex Menendez Photography, Orlando Photographer....

->> Kevin,
Thanks for the info Kevin.
They called out of the blue and said for 20 bucks they would basically give me a consultation with a web/support/reviewer type guy who would walk me through my site and tell me how to get the site seen better. While they did not go so far as to say that they could get me at the top of the list, they had some magical way of trying to do that???
I thought it sounded a bit fishy so I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this company before...
Thanks

->> Alex,
Ignore them. My guess is they got your name/number off of the publicly available whois information submitted while you bought your domain name. I get emails/calls/junk mail all the time from SEO companies, ect from this. Best thing to do is work on your meta data like Kevin said. And, to possibly consider private registration for your domain name(s) next time, which costs around $6 I believe. |

| ->> Virtually all SEO companies like that are quasi-scams and should be avoided at all costs. Google's page ranks are based largely on how many sites refer or link to yours. They increase your Google rankings by linking to your site from a bunch of bogus "link farm" web sites. By gaming the system in this manner, your site may increase in rank for a period of time. However, Google is well aware of this technique and you can actually end up being ranked lower in search results if it is discovered that your site was referred to from link farms. |

->> Really focus on your page's title, description tag and keywords. Be sure to reference your surrounding communities in your keywords. Unless you typically work nationally or internationally it doesn't help to be the top ranked photographer in a town two thousand miles away. Concentrate on conquering the areas where your clients generally come from. If you have an opening paragraph on your index page be sure to pack it with keywords and use alternate text under your photos.
I hope that helps,
Jon |

From experience this helps a little and is only part of the search equation. If you really want to improve your SEO, specifically your search rankings in google, use a sitemap. Since adding multiple sitemaps to different content on our site, returns for search words relating to teams or events we covered are consistently higher now in google. I've also noticed improvement in Yahoo, but not as extensively as google. |
