Any roller derby photographers out there?

->> No, not the 70s stuff with alligator pits and staged tomfoolery, modern roller derby, flat track or banked.
My wive is a skater, which makes me the team photographer/videographer. Don't get me wrong, it's a blast. I'm curious how other derby volunteers handle their images and video. Give it all away pro bono? Or, with some conditions?
Thx! |

->> Robert,
I recently photographed a roller derby event in Cleveland. I had several skaters request free images.
Even though I know some of the people involved, I look at this just like any other assignment. I priced the images the same as other sports.
Those who truly wanted the images paid the full price, those who wanted free images, didn't.
It may be hard to face it because you are involved, but believe me, even your friends will pay for your nice work. |

| ->> I shot Practice Night in Columbia, MO for my friend's wife. I just gave him the Images, he is my longtime friend. It is your choice whether you want to hand out free images or not. It all depends how you feel about it. OTOH, if this was a Pro Franchise, making tons of money, that would be a different story. This was a bunch of Housewives beating the living Shit out of each other. |

->> I was a team photographer for a year here in Columbus. The league ultimately didnt have the budget to be able to afford me and I was unwilling to simply give away my images even though I did want to support the league and see it grow.
They couldn't afford to keep paying me because they had so many other expenses for advertising, venue rental etc. Well the Canon 200mm f1.8 (awesome lens for derby) I had bought certainly caused me some expenses as well so couldn't continue either for free.
They had plenty of fans and hobbyist photographers who were willing to give them images for free as well. My stuff was better naturally but how do you compete with free, especially when the client doesn't want to pay for it?
Its your own choice if you want to give your stuff away for free, but I'd say ask yourself would you do so for any other team if your wife was a player ? Do any of your wives teammates husbands who are in other businesses dontate their services or products away free ? Probably not.
I think its probably best to leave the free images up to those hobbyist shooters and simply go and cheer your wife as a fan/husband and not a working photographer.
Perhaps instead of shooting all the games, they could pay you to shoot one match and use your higher quality images for their promo purposes etc as I'm sure its going to be over a higher quality than what the free people can deliver. |

->> Jeff/David, I hear you. With the league I'm part of (the smaller of two in Indy), lots of people, from medics, to announcers, to announcers, donate lots of things/time. To command regular fees is certainly your choice, but somewhere along the line I've adopted the philosophy that I'll do things for free because it's a good thing to do, or I'll do things for full price, no middle ground. Besides, freelance has come my way through my involvement with the team, which I get regular fees for.
Down the road, if this sport gains in popularity enough to become something more than hand to mouth, I'll ask my day rate. Until then, I'm happy volunteering my time. I understand how full-time freelancers would get steamed, but I assure you, there is very little budget for things like mesh practice jerseys and cheap hotel rooms for road bouts, let alone four figure photo services.
But, my main question is regarding usage stipulations with images/video. Have fair use guidelines been established for sharing video/stills with other leagues? |
