->> Ok so I'm behind on the game plan and the Drobo that should have been installed in May is finally getting here tomorrow. Looking for any foresight that anyone here may have. I am planning to install it on a Vista 64 machine using iSCSI as I have an extra gb port on the motherboard.
Any pitfalls or lessons that you learned the 'hard way' and can pass on would be MUCH appreciated.
Also I am looking to upgrade my copy of MS Office from the 2003 to the 2007 version as Outlook doesn't play nice with Vista 64 (not much does). Have any of you migrated up? The big question is whether the program will upgrade me and preserve all of the mail in my inbox AND deleted folder too.
There are over 17,000 emails in the deleted folder and while they are deleted I want to keep them. No I'm not ocd, yes meds help, please wipe your hands before responding. |

| ->> Well, I am on a Mac, so can't speak of the WINDOWS, but in my case, I did the recommended back up of everything, upgrade to the latest OS, and wiped and configured the DROBO to that upgrade. |

| ->> You had to re-install the OS and start from a fresh install? I'd sooner have sex with Bill Gates than to have to re-install Vista64 and all the BS driver hunting. Say it aint so. I am so looking forward to Win7 and the promise of an OS that works well and without all of the bloat that is Vista. |

->> I just plugged mine in, it recognized that there were some previously used Drobo HDs and I just told it to format and I was good to go. Pretty straight forward. My DroboPro is on a Mac, so it's formatted as: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
On Windows you have a choice of formatting options, and if I recall correctly, the choices (like all drives) are NTFS or Fat32. NTFS is preferable UNLESS you want to take the unit over to a Mac and use it there. In that case a Mac will Read/Write a Fat32 with no fuss. There ARE Mac utilities that will allow a Read/Write of NTFS drives, and Macs will recognize NTFS drives on a 'net, but there have been permission issues...
It's pretty sweet, and like the Drobos before it, easy to set up. I really don't see re-installing any OS - as long as it's current. Cheers! |

->> Eric, as for your upgrade of Office it SHOULD preserve all your old data, but just to be sure I would locate the Office User datafiles and back those up on an external until after you make the upgrade. Then if the data is not preserved you can import from the back up databases.
Not sure where these are kept on Windows machines but they are there on Macs and I'm pretty sure that on the Windows side it does the database system as well.

| ->> NO!!! I didn't reinstall, just made sure the OS was updated to the latest version at APPLE!! I mean, we always do it anyway, right? but I always make sure when I DO get a new hard drive, I do that first, and when I format, you are formatting to the most current OS. |

| ->> Y'know Ed, even though the Drobo ships OS journaled, I couldn't feel comfortable using a hard drive unless I format it to MY computer. Then, there is no doubt, and you only lose about 2-3 minutes. |

->> And the fun begins.....
First issue was that the Drobo wasn't being recognized on the iSCSI port. After about 30 minutes with tech support I disabled and enable the Ethernet port through Vista while I was on hold and the unit came alive. At least the support person was in the US and was easy to speak to.
The speed has been decent, migration from the internal drives went along at 55MB/sec. I'm now moving 500-ish GB from a USB external at the rate of 23MB/sec and the OS is reporting a 7 hour process. At this rate it will be several days before all the data is migrated over to the Drobo.... I think that I have 5TB more to go, before I delve into the DVD's and bring back 'old' files.
Anybody have two of these hooked up yet? I can so see adding a second unit in six months. So see it. 16tb hooked up to my home entertainment center, music and video on demand and not worry that if I don't watch a show the DVR will delete it to free up space.... Yup #2 isn't far off. |
