->> While editing this weekend's games I crossed the line. My original D3 has now exceeded 500,000 frames and not made a single trip to service. I've had to clean the sensor ONCE in the 15 or 16 months that I've had it.
I love this thing..... I can only hope that it's new twin brother has the same work ethic ;) |

->> Eric,
You should see the Pissing contest at DPR, some guy whinning because his shutter on his D3 died after 80K actuations and his Warranty Expired 6 months ago, he was expecting Nikon to fix it for free because an "Implied"Warranty of 300K Actuations!! I had to laugh!! I told him about you!!
FWIW, you are soooo screwed!! You had to open you mouth!!
I just picked up a third D3 from an FM member, with 3700 Actuations for $3175 ;)
I'm happy!!

->> 500,000 clicks!? I would just send that baby in before it crashes on you in the middle of an assignment! I am curious to know how many times you press the shutter every day...Care to do the math?
Yamil, I paid just about that for my original D1H...Oh how times change... |

->> Patrick, just once....... then I lift off the shutter at quitting time..... Or at least that's what some people will think.
I just picked up another D3 from Jeff. Came in with 8907 clicks so between it and the D2Xs and D200 I'm covered in a pinch. I'm just SUPER impressed with the quality of the body. NONE of the rubber has fallen off. The batteries are all still in super condition. This is SO the Nikon qualities that I was accustomed to in the days of film.
A few years ago I wrote a lengthy letter to the service manager when a D2X was going in to NPS for the 4th time that year and how the quality of equipment had taken a hard slide. They replaced that body n/c with a D2Xs that went the distance. It had it's trips to service for repairs and a new shutter so I expected the same with this body. To say the least I am impressed beyond words with how far Nikon has pushed the bar up. |

I did a portrait shoot tonight and I was just saying to myself, wow, this (D3) is the sharpest, nicest camera I've ever owned, you beat me to it today! |

->> Peter, it's in the EXIF data of each image produced by the camera. The tag is located in the section called "Maker Note" and is called "Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera". You have to find a program that will show you all of the EXIF data and point it at a JPEG file made by the D3.
On a PC, I use IExif, a freeware EXIF viewer from Opanda. To download it, go to http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm and click on one of the three Download_N links. |

| ->> I love my Nikons (because they're so dependable). And Nikon's service. Had the glass over one of my cameras' LCD screens cracked at the X Games. NPS/Nikon repair handled that "while I waited", and turned around my 80-200 with major issues (AF, mostly) in a couple of days. The crew in El Segundo ROCKS. |

| ->> On a whim, I just tried opening a file in Photo Mechanic and looking at the Info window. There is an unlabeled number at the bottom that changes with each frame that I would suspect is a cumulative frame count. My D3 seems to be showing 118000 +/- after a year which I'd think is a reasonable total. |

->> Jeff it wasn't that hard to do. One of the things that I seem to be selling many of are action sequence posters. Six or 10 images to a poster. Some coaches have had parents approach us for sequences of pitching or batting so that they can find flaws in mechanics. I even got a call from a scout in FL scheduling me to get several pitching series of a prospect that he was scouting. So in some cases I'm using the D3 as a slow motion 'video' camera.
Tony NPS had an event at Fenway and replaced the lcd cover on a D200 for me on the spot too. All I did was let Annie know in advance and they made sure to have the part on hand.
I can only hope that my other D3 will last as long. |
