->> Coretta Scott King
Barack Obama
Kobe Bryant
Jesse Jackson
Denzel Washington
These are my top five. I don't really count pro athletes because I see them and photograph them all the time except for Kobe Bryant. He has kind of transended athletics and become a world figure.
My question to everybody is what other athletes have moved beyond being popular in sports and are known around the world?

->> People I have photographed, or people I have spent anywhere from 30 min to 10 days with shooting them 1-on-1? People where I was in a press pit or a huddled pool, or people I was able to have conversations will and actually work with in creating their photos?
In terms of working 1-on-1 and having direct access with minimal interference from handlers (or no handlers at all) this is my list off the top of my head...
- Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin
- James Taylor, Music Legend
- Dr. Howard Dean, Fmr Vermont Gov; Fmr Presidential Hopeful; Chairman of the DNC
- Ralph Nader, Fmr Presidential Candidate; Consumer Advocate
- Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft
- Jeff Taylor, Founder of Monster.com
There been others, but these are the most memorable to me.
Really photographing someone famous from a press riser, press pit, with a 300mm or longer for a waist to head shot, or for the first 3 songs of their concert, from the sidelines...really it shouldn't count.
If we're going with 'famous people I've photographed'
I've been assigned to be the 1-on-1 documentary photog shooting George HW Bush & Bono, but while I had great access I didn't get to know my subjects. I've photographed two sitting presidents; traveled with two candidates in the final stages of their presidential campaigns; photographed the Pope; The Manning Brothers; countless heads of state at the U.N.; etc etc etc...but so what? I didn't get to know my subjects in any way . |

->> Fish,
Oh, handlers. They can be the worst. Shooting Moby, his PR spokesperson handler insisted on a shorter shoot time than I wanted, then shortened it down to FIFTEEN minutes when they arrived. Spielberg came in with a huge entourage but they left him alone with me, he was a completely regular guy, easy to talk to and easy to direct. Most directors I've photographed are. But handlers drive me nuts!!!
Ever had this one: The agent/manager/etc. insists on me hiring their people instead of my crew for wardrobe or makeup. Then when asked if they've seen my work, since they're so concerned with those details, they admit they haven't. I'd like to think we have a craft we've worked hard on, not just a shutter monkey. I've turned those down, it's usually someone who hasn't been around much and is insecure. Those are the shoots I happily pass on. |

->> Tony,
Best one ever...James Taylor. Call his PR flak, he returns the call himself. In speaking with JT he heard my daughter in the background, we discuss his twins and my daughter being close in age, then insists I bring her to the shoot so she can play with his boys. Show up at his house he answers the door "Hi I'm Jim."
Spends half the shoot making sure my daughter is having fun, proceeds to make my daughter lunch.
When all is done hours longer than I planned (I hoped for 10-15min ended up with forever)...JT sees my wife's classic bright yellow '83 Volvo 242 outside. He apparently loves old Volvos and asks if he can take it for a spin around his house.
Contrast this a shoot a week earlier with two little rappers who stood me up, then were hours late for their shoot and jerked me around. By little rappers I mean like 14 to 16 years old for a gig for The Source. These little kids are already forgotten...while JT who is an actual legend was amazing! |

| ->> Wally, well said. My favorite "famous" people are my friends and family. More than five for sure (though I'm sure some folks out there wonder if I do have any friends). I think we should next have a list of "infamous" subjects. I bet some 'players' would be inter-changeable |
