->> Greetings,
In the next week, I'm scheduled to fly into San Jose (SJC) and then will travel by car to Fresno to meet some colleagues the next day. Since I have the better part of my arrival day to myself, I'm interested in exploring interesting places along the way.
Does anyone have any suggestions of visual things I might look for. I'm open minded to almost anything that you suggest.
Thanks,
Ross |

| ->> Not a whole lot between San Jose and Fresno. There's probably a joke in there somewhere. But one suggestion would be to detour slighly into the Monterrey-Carmel area on the coast. Cruise along 17-mile drive. It's really pretty. |

->> Thanks Craig, That's what my research has suggested. I was hoping there might be some interesting place along that route that is not well known but might be picture worthy. For example, a town stuck in time, an old road diner in the middle of nowhere, things that seem out of place, etc.
I like the idea of staying near the coast. I have read that that stretch of coastline is picturesque.
Does anybody have any other ideas? |

->> Ross, in addition to the coast if you have time to head east of Fresno you may want to check out Yosemite or Sequoia/Kings Canyon. Both are about 90 minutes from Fresno.
Oh, and also, be prepared for hot weather. It's going to be in the 105-107 range all week so the coast or mountains may provide an escape from the furnace that is the Central Valley in July. |

->> Drive into Manteca and find a bar called the Islander Tavern. Go in there, ask for Bruce and tell him Jody sent you. You'll be treated like a king (Bruce is my dad), but I doubt you'd be able to make the drive to Fresno after that!

->> Stop in Stockton to get gas.
Get mugged...get the full Central Valley experience.
(I grew up there...I can relate) |

->> Ross,
drive down 152 east from 101 near Gilroy, and there is tremendous farmland with a variety of crops you can shoot in late afternoon light. Rolling hills, sprinklers gushing, neatly arranged row crops with their geometric layouts... very nice. Stop at San Luis Reservoir, again, in late afternoon light for some possibilities... Many lonely oak trees against the brown rolling hills with backgrounds of brilliant blue skies adjacent to San Luis... The wind surfers in San Luis Forebay are a challenge to shoot...
There's not a whole lot between Los Banos and Fresno, except the old Big Orange hamburger stand on highway 99 just south of Chowchilla which was a central valley icon for decades; now closed and slowly deteriorating.
Night shots of the CertainTeed factory near Chowchilla are fun...
Just drive slow and keep looking and you'll see plenty to shoot. |
