->> I am on the fence and want to know if anyone switched to Adobe P on a MAC from FCS? I want to use what works best with my 5D, and am about to pop a blood vessel! Anyone have an opinion? I know FCS has a new update today, but wasn't as big a change as I had hoped.

->> I use Premiere Pro, but I've heard that FCS is less glitchy. Premiere Pro isn't the smoothest running program, in my opinion.

->> Actually, there are some pretty significant changes in the new version. As for using a 5D with either application, I have had very little trouble with FCS as long as I convert the files to Apple's ProRes before editing. I have known others that have had zero success with using Premiere and 5D files. But I am sure there is SOME way to make it work.

->> Good to know. My FCS is version 1, and useless since ProRes isn't a part of it. Have you seen any quality loss in the conversion? That is my primary concern, and what kind of machine do you run FCS on Jason?

->> FCS seems to be the best application for handling 5d vid. You need to run FC6 or higher, 7 just got released, run it thru pro-res which will convert it to a. editable quicktime file, power, power, power is the best way to handle these large files

->> Scott - I am on a 2.33 Macbook Pro w/3GB of RAM. There is no quality loss when converting to ProRes. In fact, ProRes is a better quality than the H.264 that the 5D files start off as.

->> Premiere doesn't compare and the new features of FCS 7 are very significant. I will be updating from FCS 6 right away.
Depends how in depth you plan to take your editing but the options provided by the suite are unparalleled for the money. |

->> I've taught editing to journalists for three years, and started on Final Cut, learned and taught Avid, did a short project on Premiere (and pulled my hair out!!) and have languished on an older Final Cut on my computer since going out on my own. I've been waiting for awhile for a new studio to come out but got scared when I heard rumors about Apple possibly abandoning it. Glad they didn't, was hesitant to spend a bunch ( I had partnered years ago with a friend to purchase Final Cut when we were in film school and since moved, so I have to buy a full copy again) But need to upgrade to Adobe PS4 and was on the fence to upgrade the package that included Premiere too, or get FCS 2.5. I think I will stay with what I know (and like!) and hold PS4 off a little longer.
Thanks gang! |

->> Premiere is not a bad program once you get used to it (like all of them, really). If you're on a PC it's better than AVID. If you're on a Mac FCP is the way to go.

->> And additionally, Apple reduced the price for FCS to $999 from it's original $1299.
