First 'commercial' sports shoot.

->> I'm willing to bite the bullet here and ask for a critique of my new 'sport' section on my site. I know it's limited, but I'm just in the beginnings. Please tear them down if you wish. I just want to see what other sport photographers think. Thanks guys.

I just wrapped up a 2009 football promo campaign for a major university. But due to NCAA rules, I cannot display them until after the season (or when the players are gone). Lame.

->> The link isn't working because SportsShooter drops the trailing "/" in the link. Probably the easiest way to get there is just visit the main site and click SPORT.

I personally don't like the huge + under my cursor. It gets the point across that I can click to advance to the next photo but I find it distracting from the photos.

->> Biggest issue I have is that when you have the thumbnails for the gallery showing, it crops of the top of your images, at least on my system.

I was looking at the portraits and thinking "why on earth would he of framed it with the top of the head missing like that ?" lol

Then I realized that as long as I had the mouse over the thumbnails it would crop off the main image. Of course one could move the mouse to solve the issue, but the typical viewer going through a gallery is going to most likely keep the mouse over the thumbnails so its something you might want to give some thought to correcting.

I would also add it seems a bit random in how you grouped the subjects of your galleries, as some of the car photos in the commerical gallery don't really look like commercial photography to me, and the sport stuff looks more like portraits etc.

Not saying they are bad images but as a client, I dont feel they'd really give me a clear idea of what you do or specialize in.

Your shot of all the bats for example looks more like a photojournalism image than commercial photogrpahy to me, or the third one has the bat not even in sharp focus.

Lastly, this is just a matter of taste more than anything, but I personally don't really like the 45 degree tilt look. I dont think you came out of art school in the 1980's where that look was so overdone. It can have its place of course, but you've got so many images that way and I think that could turn some people off, just FYI based upon my own taste for what its worth

->> Whoops, sorry

I like the 1st photo a great deal, second one doesn't do anything for me really, 3rd shot I find a bit ackward, 4th shot is nice and a unique perspective, 5th shot is good but a bit too dark, I would like a touch more fill on the side of the face so its not totally detailless black.

Not to go back to my previous unasked for overall critique, but I'm a little confused as to the "sport" aspect of this since it looks a bit more like a commerical shoot for a brand of athletic clothing to me or a portrait sesssion. I'm not sure quite what the look or style your going for is with it.

Keep working on your lighting. I know you are going for harsh highlights from the sides but you really need a little fill from the front to balance things out. You also may want to meter your lights to calculate your exposure a little better to keep things more consistent. Diffusion on your reflectors may help smooth and even out the side light a little better. Backgrounds are distracting too, either take them all the way black by bumping up your exposure or find a better spot.

I would pick one shot and shoot some others in a similar style for your website instead of 4 variations of the same thing.

You asked for it!
