Low Cost and fast 3.5x5 Prints??
Jim Pierce, Photographer
Waltham | MA | usa | Posted: 9:00 PM on 07.22.09
->> I have a shoot that requires me to supply approximatly 2000-2200 3.5x5 prints 2 days later.

I have never used Costco/Walmart/CVS but think this might be my only way to get it done in time and at a low cost. These photos will be used for an ID type product.

I have only spoken to my local costco and they say I need to send them via their website AND then call to let them know I want 3.5x5. I worry about the upload time via online, rather than bringing in a CD/CF card etc. They say they "can't do it this way"? I also worry about needing to call.?

Any experience with the above? Can they do this in time (24 hours)?

Any other options that you may have used?

Any help appreciated.

Jim

->> I've used walmart for prints before. They arent bad quality and its very cheap. They can be done within a hour... now 2000+ prints may take some time but I would think walmart could handle it.

->> As long as you resize them to a more optimum size for making a 3.5x5 the files should not be too large and the upload time should not be a big deal.

I have not used Costco but do use Walgreens and Walmart pretty frequently. Assuming the person running the printer has a general idea what they are doing the quality is acceptable and the price is about unbeatable.

If you have multiple stores in your area you can speed up the process by submitting them in smaller chunks to multiple locations.

->> I've used Costco for printing 500+ 4x6's before and they did it within 24 hours. Dunno why that person told you to upload them. I just took in a CD. Resize them first like Kevin said to make the transfer at the kiosk faster. They use the Fuji and the prints are pretty good.

->> If you have one of the ritz chain camera stores around give them a look. Depending on when the shoot is ritz offers 6 cent 3.5x5 on tuesday and wednesdays

->> I personally would upload them. Once you have them loaded to their system you can quickly react if there is a problem. You can quickly resubmit an order if they lose it or it kicks out of their machine, you can quickly route to a new location if their printer goes down in mid-run and you also don't have to drive to the store and stand there for however long it takes to move 2000+ images from a disk to their kiosk.

Because they will maintain your images on their server when you upload them you can also easily produce the inevitable reprints without a second trip to the store and without having to reload anything.

->> I've used both Walmart and Sams Club for quick 1hr prints. Decent quality and quick at a bargain price. I second the suggestion to resize down to minimize the upload time as that tends to be the biggest drawback. I believe you can take a CD into both, but I don't know if it costs the same to do that.
