I don't think even NFL-grade neck protection would help you with that one. You're talking about three pounds of hardware on a moment arm a foot or so from your spine. It makes your entire head into one big torque wrench with a lot of inertial mass at the far end. The force your neck would get with any impact at the far end would cripple/kill you pretty easily.
