| ->> A "true" journalist, which all news anchors today should try to imitate. Unlike todays "bubble headed bleach blond that comes on at 5." |

->> This is truly sad. My family has an interesting history with Cronkite. He flew on a photo recon mission with my grandfather and Harold Edgerton I think in late 1944. I can't remember the year, but Cronkite told me he remembered that had quite a raucous night at a French bar afterwards.
During the Vietnam War, my uncle, his son, was a POW, an F-4 photo recon pilot that was shot down in 1972, and the camp he was taken to was visited by Cronkite, and televised his visit with the prisoners. My uncle was standing right next to him.
At the Cronkite school where I studied photojournalism, he gave a presentation and I jockeyed for a few minutes with him. I bought him a Coke, and told him of my family connection with him, and he remembered them ALL! He filled in stories (specifically the flight with my granddad) about the both of them.
A great storyteller, informer, and voice of an industry I fear doesn't exist anymore at the level if ever will. |

->> This does make me very sad. A real downer on my birthday.
I was in the newsroom when I heard about Cronkite passing, which was sad, but, you know, back to work. Later that evening at home I saw CNN's spot about whether or not Obama was wearing "mom jeans" when he threw out the first pitch at the All Star game the other night. And then I shot my TV set and vowed to sit in dark silence and drink until I was no longer embarrassed to be a journalist. |

->> I hear ya Lindy.
Watching the news the night this was announced (and the day after) was surreal. Clips of the definitive broadcast journalist being introed by people who in many cases have the credibility of a loan shark - and similar qualifications. The announcement of his passing sandwiched between stories of the latest fatal car wreck and an "investigative report" on unclean bedsheets in hotel rooms. |

->> Sorta like "Entertainment Tonight" going on in a intro about their investigative reporters on the MJ story as I was flipping through channels the other night.
I about had another heart attack. Those buttheads couldn't investigate their way out of a paper bag.
I am getting old. I hate so much of today's modern society it's not funny. How people can take the money and disconnect their souls is beyond me.
RIP Walter. Thank you for being you and tell us the story in a clear, concise way. You were a class act, and a even better human being. |
