Golf etiquette

| ->> I had heard one doesn't begin shooting golfers until the club contacts the ball. In looking through some of the Getty images mentioned in another post, there are shots of several golfers with the club still behind their heads, but curved as if they've begun their swing. Are these types of shots done on "warm-up" swings? |

->> Those images could very well be on the golfer's follow through, after already making contact with the ball, but yes you're correct about golf etiquette.
You're also not suppose to line up your lens at the same exact line of vision a golfer is about to putt. You should be off to one side or the other. Although then again if you're shooting with a 400mm lens or longer and kneeling in front of a mob of spectators I doubt a golfer could differentiate a shooter from the surrounding crowd. |

->> Another little known rule of golf etiquette...
Don't wear pants louder than the players are wearing..... Like the ones John Daly wore today at the British Open....
The style is called "Shagadelic Green"...
Here's a link to the pants from the manufacturer's site:

->> Those photographers could of been using a very long lens with extender far enough away to make the shutter inaudible, or they may have been using a sound blimp or perhaps a camera with a silent shutter or electronic shutter.
I would trust than any Getty golf shooters fully understand all rules and etiquettes of the game and would only produce such photos in a manner that is not going to cause a disturbance. |

| ->> Those Canon G9's have been very popular on the golf course to get silent shots of golfers in the their backswings. Without seeing the actual photos you are referring to, I would assume it was done that way. |

->> We kind of discussed this before. Long lens, extender, cropped. Think 500mm or more, 1.4x or more and Photoshop is our friend. Most of the Getty guys I have seen shoot Canon EOS 1ds MarkIII.
You can get away with it, you just have to be very careful. Or get a G9. |

| ->> re The pants. If they were $40 instead of $90, I'd order a pair. That would have to be worth a stroke or three in my next match! |

No need to worry about spilling on those pants either. |

->> "Oh, this is the worst hat I ever saw. I bet you buy this hat you get a free bowl of soup... Oh, but it looks good on you though!"
And Daly finished the 2009 Open Championship Top 25 too, wearing pants worse than Judge Smails outfit, or that of Al Czervik. All of this from a movie released during the year (1980) that Tom Watson won his 3rd of 5 Open Championships.
If you want a shot of a player in mid swing you HAVE to use a long lens, extender, and do it during a practice swing. Since many players take practice swings not far away from the ball, so the practice swing shot looks almost like it's live. Either that or get an Olympus Digital Pen and have great timing. |
