->> Photojournalism has lost a tireless devotee today:
Cal Olson, a former editor of The Sioux City Journal, died Thursday.
Family members say Olson, a past president of the National Press Photographers Association, long-time editor of the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism annual and a member of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team from the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, died after a fall.
Olson, 84, was born in Vining, Minn. He served as a naval aviator during World War II and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He served as managing editor of The Forum and joined The Journal in 1978. He retired in 1989.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, one son, Charles, and one daughter Catherine McMullen. Currently, a photograph of Olson is included in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center's exhibit, "Our Stories: World War II Veterans Remember Extraordinary Times."
Although Cal had retired long before I became photo editor at the Journal, he was an excellent mentor and was always willing to lend an ear or come into the office to help judge photojournalism contests. He proved you could rise from the ranks of staff photographer to become editor-in-chief.
The 12th BOP book, the last he edited, carried this forward: This book is sympathetically dedicated to all the news photographers who have ever wondered why God created editors. And vice versa." |
