Major Nikon 80-200 AF S Problem

->> Tonight I was shooting Little League and my 80-200 Nikon AF-S lens came apart just above the zoom ring. The lens stayed on the camera, but was loose at the collar area. Has anyone been through this before and just what can I expect for NPS repair?
Thanks in advance,
Jon |

->> Rob,
I've heard the CPS stories. I'm very happy to be where I am. This lens has been all over the world and held up under amazingly stressful circumstances. This is not a case of inferior equipment. But, you know, anyway we can start that old N vs C thread.......... |

Why? With the disintegration of his lens, his shots already are out of focus. |

->> Jon, I think your lens will be OK.
I dropped my Nikkor 80-200 AF-S lens back in 2003. It broke in half like an arrow at the same spot that yours sounds to be having its problem. There were computer guts, etc. hanging out of the gaping split in the lens.
I took it to Quality Camera Service in Downers Grove, IL where it was repaired to almost as before condition for $320. I say "almost," as the zoom ring has one slightly tight spot as I pass through the 135-180mm range. I hardly ever notice it, but to have that part (helicoid , I think) replaced would have doubled the cost, so I passed on that. It is still a sharp and trusted lens today.
I'm told that the guy who owns that shop is a former Nikon tech from when they had a repair station in Morton Grove, IL. Quality Photo has been getting all of my non-warranty Nikon work ever since. They are pretty popular with Chicago area newspapers and the Illinois Press Photographers Association. They usually have a booth at the IPPA seminars, cleaning sensors for free.
He also told me that the lens was designed to break in that spot if dropped, to protect glass elements, and other more valuable parts inside, from taking the hit. The collar itself is made of magnesium, so it is the "weakest link."
Good luck. |

->> Jon,
Thanks so much. I really love the lens and hope things work out. I'll keep your Chicago area source in mind in case of future equipment problems.
