Inside the KKK

->> Photographer Anthony Karen's images appear on the LIFE web site and detail how he gained access to shoot some of the images he did. He followed around members of today's Ku Klux Klan. Besides many of the images being compelling, it's always interesting to me to see how other photographers gain access and interact with their subjects. You can find the images here...

->> Very good. Good info from the photographer also:
"One aspect of my interaction is that I never ask names, or interview people. My information comes naturally from routine conversations. I think pulling out a pen and paper changes the relationship between photographer and subject."
And:
"I started taking pictures of the anti-fascists, and they got extremely upset, and one started to get aggressive with me. I told him that, as we were on public property and it was an active demonstration, I would take images of whatever I wanted, and if he touched my camera I'd break his arm."
Right on. |

->> Terrific gallery; very haunting images. Thanks for posting the link.
While we're on the subject of the KKK, maybe someone can help me pin down another photo story on them that I've been trying to find. The only image I remember is one that ran doubletruck in at least one magazine; I believe it was a wide shot of a cross burning with the crucifix in the center of the frame with the Klan gathered around it near the bottom of the image. I remember that the gallery had some striking images, but I've been having a hard time digging it up. I know that's a pretty vague photo description, but...any ideas? |

->> Kevin,
The only place I could think of to begin your search is at Magnum. A number of their photographers have done essays and features on it, and there are of course a number of striking images. Dunno if you've already checked there, but it's the only place I can think of that would have a large collection of that subject matter in one place. |

->> Kevin--
Without trying to sound overly picky, allow me to clarify that a crucifix is a representation of a cross with a figure of Jesus Christ on it.
I don't think the KKK burn a crucifix, typically they burn a cross.

James is the only Herald shooter that I do not regularly see during my day to day coverage of South Mississippi. |

->> William, Scott - yes, James is the photographer I was thinking of. William, the image you linked to specifically is the one I had in mind. Thanks for your help guys!
And Steve - thanks for the clarification. I can see how confusing those two things would have the potential to offend someone, so I certainly wouldn't want to make that mistake if I ever find myself in a discussion on the topic. |
