->> The problem is that papers arent "profitable" The problem is the actual and predicted declines in ad revenue will eventually catch up with them. Given the number of layoffs, furloughs, ect, I am not surprised that they managed to eek out a profit. I think that it is a trend that will eventually end though.

The "problem" with publicly held news media companies is that investors expect extremely high rates of return. Since newspapers have traditionally been tremendously profitable, investors have correspondingly high expectations that they will continue to perform at those levels.

When those profits drop, investors take their money elsewhere and the corporation's stock price goes down.

The higher considerations of journalism's value to democracy and society are fundamentally incompatible with corporate ownership.
