->> I'm about to make an upgrade to the office. We shoot a lot of sports, portraits, and student life activities but the idea of adding video to our new site that goes live in the fall has now come up.

Currently we have a Canon 50D. We also have access to a Canon XL1 (video) and Canon GL2 (video) available through another office.

With that said, which would be the better addition, a Canon Mark III or a canon 5D Mark II.

Sports obviously mark III, that 5d is going to be too slow, but is the video eqp I have now as good as the 5d mark II?

I would think if you are shooting mostly sports videos and student-life activities, you're going to get by fine with what you have now for video gear. Also, if you're going to be outputting the video strictly for web, it's not exactly necessary to have HD.

->> That all depends on your needs.

Both the XL1 and the GL2 are great cameras. Neither of them are HD. They do have more control over audio and probably a better AF for standard hand held work.

The 5D Mark II will give you a very different look. You will have the resolution and low light abilities of HD along side the depth and flexibility of using any of your lenses. The AF is not the standard smooth video AF. Also, it is not the type of camera that you hand hold for long periods of time doing video. There is no balance assist like a shoulder mount.

If you are going to be doing a lot of video that would benefit from the features of the 5D2 and won't be moving the camera a lot during shots, it would be a great investment. On the other hand, if you are tracking motion with the camera or need it to be hand held, you are probably better off with what you already have.
