Nikon 300mm AFS II versus 300 AFS VR

->> While I am very familiar and happy with Nikon's 300mm AF-S II lens I will need to make a purchase in the next few weeks and need advise. Either I go with the new VR version or look for a used AFS II to fill the slot.

I have 2 blown shoulders so unlike he who shall not be named in an SS post, I will NOT be hand holding the lens. I'll be lucky to not have to use a monopod for a 50 1.4.

So for those of you who have upgraded to the new VR 300mm, was it worth it? Is the AF any faster or better or more accurate than my trusted AFS II?

It's been a while since I've purchased new glass, does Nikon still offer the 5 year warranty extension for registering the warranty info online?

->> Eric,

we have both at work. The 300 VR II is a night and day difference over the AFS version. The optics seem crisper, the focus is sharper. The VR system works great. Its also lighter. Great lens.

->> Dave thanks, anyone else? The VR version isn't rated in the equipment guide so I looking from opinions from people who have used both.

->> I agree the focus is faster and the images sharper. I don't use the VR so I cannot comment on that.

->> We have both of the lenses for work. The VR model is defintely a clear step up. It is sharper, faster to focus, lighter, and feels better.
