->> Just saw this posting on "The Luminous Landscape". Thought I would bring it since we like to talk about new cameras, like will Canon come up with a Mark IV and the rumors of a D4 and D4x from Nikon next year.

->> I don't know. P&S models keep cramming more and more pixels into tinier and tinier sensors anyway (even though I still like my 4MP and 6MP p&s's as much or more than my 8MP & 10MP models, at least as far as image quality goes). Pros may know the difference, but as evidenced by Nikon & Canon both scaling back their NPS/CPS services while DSLR sales continue to skyrocket, pros are less and less the people buying DSLRs.

So, we may have reached the limit, but who cares if your market doesn't know or care?

Not to mention other aspects of Moore's Law will provide more processing power, so even if the megapixel race stops, you can increase FPS and noise performance in newer bodies.

I wouldn't count out those 4th-generation bodies. I'll bet we'll see them both before 2009 is out.

->> Megapixels are easier to quantify in marketing literature, so they will always be a factor. But noise/high ISO sensitivity and dynamic range are the great frontiers now. Wasn't too long ago that 1600 was a barely usable ISO setting. Now it's expected and commonly used - and many shoot way beyond that with no difficulties. If the Nikon roadmap is true, we'll all soon be enjoying a quite acceptable 6400 with pushing to 128,000. That will truly be amazing.
