->> Has Nikon even finished covering the cost of R&D on the D3x to come out with a D4x? I mean seriously, that would be what, a bit less than a year on updating their most expensive camera?
Yeah, these rumors keep flaring up, but this just seems completely, utterly out of place with Nikon's general release schedule of flagship models. Or even the little brother versions. I would be thinking the "s" versions would be released, slightly updated, and with video capabilities before they threw out an entirely new camera line. Especially on the x versions, wherein they would be assuming people would be okay with spending an addtional 8k in a terrible economy to update their gear. Maybe it is true, but it seems like really bad business. |

->> Daniel, the cost of new, updated gear has never seemed to be a deterrent to many of the SS.com community. I often wonder where people get their money and how they justify spending the sums on the kind of gear we see at various events. But that's their business, of course.
Nikon is in the business of selling gear, not just developing it so it looks cool on their shelves. The mindset used to be in film cameras that your gear would last many years before it needed to be replaced or updated. That has been replaced with the "latest and greatest" mindset and scads of people right here on SS race to buy the latest and greatest.
Let me ask, do you believe Nikon would rather sell you a new camera once every eight years or once every two years? Is it possible their research and development teams are working a step ahead to attempt a release of new gear on a faster cycle? Is it possible the D4 was already well underway in R&D when the D3 was released? You gotta think that when the D3 came out, they didn't pack it in and take a long vacation, THEN ..... start on the D4. Just a thought.
Bad economy or not, people seem to have money for this stuff and the troubled economic times haven't seemed to prevent a lot of people from buying. |

->> Robert,
I know, and unfortunately anything you write questioning the rumor tree always comes out as a bit hostile, it really wasn't meant to be like that. I'm just always wondering how actually legitimate any of these rumors are. I remember the D3 rumors, about a year before any were actually released. They looked all new and fancy, and were complete lies. No one seems to have any information as to the validity of these rumors, just that someone somewhere said they had a sheet that may or may not have been from Nikon, that listed specs that may or may not be what they will produce someday. Possibly. Reminds me of the Jeff Goldblum dead thing, where major TV networks got their information from some people on twitter...
And Jeff,
I still don't know how people drop 30k swapping sides every other day when one company makes the latest, greatest, marginally better than the competition camera. But I'm just saying, Nikon has been remarkably consistent with their releases of 's' versions, and waiting at least 2 years before new models. Gotta cover costs of creating the camera. Now imagine though, if you will for a moment, if another company rises to be considered a respectable professional camera for general use. Right now, we generally see a new flagship released every 10-15 months. Then it'd be like every 5-6 months, and the classifieds would be flooded with gear. To be sure, that'd be kinda awesome, because then we'd all have grabs at lots and lots of cheap gear. I'd hold out for a 400 f/2.8 for 23 cents... |

->> Put me down for 1 of each, I have a check from a banking insider in Nigeria that has had an unfortunate turn of events with a wealthy family member. Should have funds clearing in time for the Nikon roll out.
Jeff Snyder don't worry your funds are coming from a much more mundane source. |

That's just absurd. Santa Claus is real.
The Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are complete frauds though. They took my money when they told me if I just give them my bank account number and SSN, they'd transfer the money... |

| ->> Does no one else remember the ridiculous pictures posted of the D3 I think it was maybe 2 years ago? I want to say it started as a gag, then people like Ken Rockwell picked it up as truth, then I think I even saw it on a few more legitimate sources. They looked like a Nikon if aliens had designed it. Or people who believe everything space should have lots of super rounded edges and domes. |

->> Rumors are just that. Rumors. But there are often inklings of truth in rumors... sometimes not. There seems to be a whole industry revolving around rumors, and in Nikon's case, a whole website called nikonrumors.com
So if you revel in this speculative stuff, then by all means enjoy hypothesizing about the next whatnot from whoever - hey, it's fun to fantasize too.
On a more business-like note, it's far easier for a company to update/upgrade internal components and release an updated model (say a D3x from a D3, or a D700x from a D700) than it is to research, design, prototype, and tool up for a totally new model. So, changing an internal chip, processor board, or even the sensor itself would be an economical way to keep a production run alive and longer lived. Once major specifications and components are involved, then the production cycle takes a bit longer to get ready for market - with field testing a key component as well.
I admit that I do enjoy reading about all this hoopla, but it's more armchair stuff. When it happens, it happens. If anyone follows Apple speculations, it makes all this Nikon postulation trivial by comparison. Cheers! |

| ->> Hi Robert, you are absolutely correct; these are just rumours, but keep in mind that every single new model released by every single major DSLR manufacturer in the last 5 years was prefaced by a rumour. And while I don't get breathless on these rumours, I do pay attention when they start, because frequently they turn out to be true. Is there a D4 just beyond the horizon? Probably not, but we don't know for sure one way or the other... Might be a 16-meg, 14-bit D3... we just don't know. |

->> Chuck, I saw that as an iReport on CNN but the cell phone video they showed seemed to be taken by one of the reindeer and didn't show the car too well and many of the reindeer seemed to be cheering. Come to think of it they gave a "Video Courtesy of iReporter Blitzen" credit on it.
And yes, there will be a D4 and probably a D5 and a D6 somewhere down the road so in a sense I can start a rumor for the new D5 now and I'll be right -- eventually.
And Jose, leave MCTDirect out of this or I'll have to sic my west coast posse on you. |
