NIKE CONFISCATES VIDEO OF PLAYER DUNKING ON LEBRON ...

College player dunks over LeBron James at his basketball camp and a NIKE representative confiscates the video tapes from 2 cameramen, apparently at the direction of LeBron himself.
Two questions beg asking-
1) Is LeBron James really this insecure?
2) What compelled the cameramen to give up their tapes |

->> Awesome comment under the article: "Keep writing stuff like this and Nike will come and take your website... Once you start having fun, The Nikes come and take it away"
Perhaps the cameraman decided to give up his taoe in exchange for being allowed to remain. I'm sure, in hindsight, he now wishes he had packed up his sticks and gone home. That footage would bring in some good dollars.
The ironic thing is the negative PR from this is far worse than some video of a kid dunking on James. Spoiled children should not be allowed to have their way.

| ->> The right thing to have done was for LeBron to congratulate the kid and to promote a potential up and coming star. Instead, LeBron and Nike turned it a huge negative. I sure feel less respect for LeBron provided all this is accurate. |

->> Unbelievable. Why on earth would anyone cough up tapes in a situation like that?
Missed opportunity. All they had to do is record the PR guy asking for the tapes. Instant classic. |

| ->> Actually it wasn't the dunk, but rather in an uncharacteristic moment, Lebron shook the kids hand and offered congratulations, and Nike in turn had to destroy that moment of weakness, because Lebron is as we all know, "a winner" and winners don't do things like that. |

->> Nike's Statement:
"Nike has been operating basketball camps for the benefit of young athletes for decades and has longstanding policies in place regarding what events are open and closed to media coverage. Unfortunately, for the first time in four years, two journalists did not respect our "no videotaping" policy at an after hours pick-up game Monday evening following the LeBron James Skills Academy."

So why did Nike wait until Lebron got dunked on to enforce this policy ? |

->> Nike has no right to confiscate anything. They can ask the shooters to leave, and they can sue the crap out of them if the footage gets used without proper releases/permission (whether it holds up in court is another matter). But they cannot just take tapes and/or gear.
It's sad that more photographers don't know their rights. |

->> I am with David. No way in hell your getting the tape. Take the credential or whatever but do not touch the camera. The shooter is young and inexperience in these situations is a bummer.
These guys are Corp reps, not cops not judges. Can they kick you out ? Sure . Can they detain you and take your tape for not following the rules ? No. They have no legal power and unless I am mistaken that puts them up for possible charges of felony grand larceny for taking the tape with force (eg the value of the tape would be more than $500 dollars). SO WHY THE HECK did he give them the tape ?
lol somebody should send this guy a What Would Carlos Miller do ? wristband. |

| ->> While I think it's worthy to debate if the guys should have coughed up the tapes when demanded, I think there's a good chance that the "dunking" angle of this incident is being over-played. The cameraman quoted said that "minutes" passed between the dunk and Nike reps asking for the tapes. How many "minutes"? Five, ten, twenty? Was it really all about the "dunk"? The only smoking gun is that the videographer feels "there's nothing I can think of besides" the dunk being the reason. Perhaps it really was due to Nike's professed video policy and they were asked to stop once the Nike officials noticed them. If not, I'm sure that there's been enough media there in the past four years to easily contradict Nike if they're lying. |

->> If I shoot something for my station, the only way they'd be able to get that tape from us would be if it were required by a court-issued subpoena. That's our company policy...
I would leave before they could get a tape from me, or give them a blank tape and say it was the dunk. |

->> This will end up in the Hall of Shame 10 Worst PR moves. Jeff is correct, they should have thought outside the box. Made sure he got a year's supply of Nikes.
BUT that would require some intelligence instead of fear.
The cameraman is a bloomin idiot. |

It should have read: "Nike confiscated it"
I guess its obvious I'm a canon shooter by my fuzziness above.
