Free software for High School class- suggestions?
Jeff Jones, Photo Editor

->> I have been tasked with teaching the newspaper and yearbook classes for my high school. Fine. I can do that. Now somebody has decided that I should teach a "digital darkroom" class - and I have more than 100 students who want to take it. I have three class periods and will have 24 little laptops (the 9" ones - which will be great for the reporting class).

I also just heard from my school's principal that I should plan on finding some free software to teach the class with.

I just found out about GIMP, and it looks promising. Does anybody have any better ideas? I absolutely cannot afford to buy 20+ copies of any software myself - not even Photoshop Elements.

Suggestions and ideas are requested. (In other words, Please help me!)

->> I was looking around for a Windows photo program (to do a demonstration) and I found Paint.Net (that's the name of the program) to be a simpler option to GIMP.

It's available at www.getpaint.net and it's free. It does all the basics.

->> Jeff,
You might try emailing adobe and seeing what happens. Do some digging around and try and find someone fairly high up in the company and see if they might be able to donate. Companies can be pretty willing sometimes.

->> Easy to use - Picasa from Google. Does basic adjustments.

Also, try

Best Buy is great about helping, but awards are not given out until February or March!!

->> Lifehacker just posted 5 online image editors. This might help if the laptops don't have a lot of space.

I'm not sure if these are free, but this might be something helpful.

->> I like the idea of doing the on-line bit, and looked at Photoshop on-line, but want to get a bit deeper with what the students can do - especially want them to understand layers.

Juliann -thank you for the information about contacting Adobe. That would be a great solution.

Thanks everybody for the ideas... I guess I am going to spend a lot of my summer break playing software tester. ;)

Jeff.
