->> I cover youth baseball tournaments on a regular basis. I was shocked to look at the schedule for the 6yr old Dizzy Dean State Baseball Tournament at Rome, GA. 9PM start times for Saturday with games two hours apart. The maximum time to complete a 6yr old baseball game is a hour and ten minutes.
Thursday and Friday night games are scheduled for 6 and 8PM. Typical schedules would have games a 1hr 15min or 1hr and 30min apart. Games two hours apart is not needed. Saturday games are also two hours apart with the last game at 9PM.
Sunday games were rained out. Games are rescheduled today with them being 1hr and 30min apart. If they would have started that way then 9PM games would have been avoided.
That's my weekend rant. |

| ->> It's the heat, tournament advisors probably don't want these young kids in the heat afraid if something happens they will get sued. Nevermind, baseball has been played from mid-morning to dusk for the last 100 years. I don't know if other age groups are like this, but it seems that games start around 5:30pm and later, gone are the days of the all day tournaments at least it seems to be that way in a lot of cities. I no longer shoot these events, but I remember having to struggle with bad lighting because the tournament would start at night. |

Wait, really? Hmmm ... maybe that's our problem. See, 9 p.m. is about when we let out little one drink his second Mountain Dew. We find it takes more than one to help wash down the midnight snack of powdered sugar and baker's chocolate.
Maybe we should have read that book by Commander Spock after all ... |

I recommend Dr. Spock's books for bringing up children and Commander Spock's book on politics. Dr. Spock : with children = good, with politics.......not so much.

It's not a tourney for 6yos. It's a tourney for the PARENTS of 6yos. That's what everyone here is missing! |

| ->> Darrell, was that you with the photo tent thing set up near the entrance to the Legion fields? I think I ran by you at one point Monday night. Would have stopped to say hi, but I was on a tight deadline, as the city commission meeting I had to cover went over by about 1.5 hours. Should have been standard stay 10 minutes and leave, but a riot nearly broke out a few times and all that goodness. Crazy people. At least no one stripped naked in protest this time. |

Or they're a parent who's in denial. |

->> There should be a time set by Dizzy Dean Baseball for each age group as to when the latest start time is allowed.
But if this was an indy tourney, they can set whatever time they want.
I want to hear more about the city commish meeting...naked protesters????????? |

For someone like myself that played sports for 23 years of my life, I agree! A tourney for 6 year olds is going WAY to far!
Starting that late is also out of the question. Hell both my girls 2 and 7 are in bed by 9pm even in the Summer with a few days here and there that we allow for staying up late. |

| ->> yeah but think of the intense emotional moments you can catch when little Johnny has a cosmic meltdown when he crashes from the sugar high he was riding to get him to stay awake past 9pm. It would be like shooting pro sports! |

| ->> Here in Texas, all-star baseball starts at FIVE years old...and, yes, tournaments run throughout the summer. Some of these kids play in 6 or 7 tournaments and, if they're winning, it can be 4 or 5 games in a few days. When my son played at that age, he played around 30 games in about 2 months. All-star baseball (PONY and Little League) is CRAZY down here...when it's the hottest time of year, too! |
