->> Just put together a tutorial on how to transmit images via an iPhone (or even iPod Touch if WiFi is available).

Check it out, if there are errors let me know. I only got around to putting together a tutorial now. This similar to a previous story here on SportsShooter.com http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/2174 |

| ->> Okay, I'm a little confused here. That is an excellent tutorial on setting up your computer as a base station thanks. But it begs the question....why if you have a wireless card in your computer or a high speed modem "stick" would you take the extra time to do all this work and put your photos on your iphone just to xmit? As I read the directions you were already connected to a wi-fi network. I have an ipod touch and often have wondered about transmitting with it but have never really seen the sense in it since it adds another step....no imaging software for the touch, so I have to be using my main computer anyway, which has a faster processor and all the bells and whistles.....I really am curious why you would want to go through all the trouble to xmit from the iphone or ipod touch. of course I know folks who shoot a photo with the iphone and then send it (the plane crash off manhattan comes to mind). Thanks for any more illumination you can give me on this. |

| ->> Chuck, you wouldn't use this on an ipod touch, but it is very handy if you have no internet access except for your phone. Your using your computer as a base station, not as an access point. If your in the parking lot of a high school and need to send photos, but have no wifi to logon too, this gets your photos out real quick. Obviously, if you can logon to a wifi network, you would be better off just using your computer. |

->> Chuck - I think this procedure is really only applicable with the iPhone, as it can access the internet via the network (not WiFi). You're correct - it would be impractical if a WiFi connection were available. Basically, with the iPhone, you can transmit images from your iPhone if WiFi is unavailable.
There's another application called iStorage that I used (after I got the tip in another SS thread) that basically does the same thing. You just set up your laptop as a network and connect your iPhone, transmit your images to your phone, and then send the images over the 3G or 2G network. This is the application I use and I've transmitted from my car in Yellowstone where WiFi connections don't exist. |

| ->> The iPod Touch could be useful to transmit. Let's say you're done working on images but the nearest free WiFi access point is in some sleezy dive bar, do you really want to open up your 17" Mac Book Pro in there? Or there's one of those college town Starbucks that NEVER has a free table. Or maybe you don't want to stand on a sidewalk with your laptop open using an access point. The iPod Touch might work out well. |

| ->> okay. that answered my question. thanks guys. it was as I thought...you would basically be using the iphone to xmit...just like we do with our motorola bluetooth connection and the high speed stick. thought I was missing something there. have a great 4th everyone. |

->> Thought I'd mention. If you really want to tether and are willing to Jailbreak your iPhone there's always PDAnet to tether.
http://www.junefabrics.com/
If you own some other smartphone you can just buy PDAnet and use it, no hacking required. So maybe you folks were right to hang onto that Treo smartphone on Verizon Wireless and ignore the iPhone. |

| ->> Tethering (legit) with the iPhone will come eventually, just like MMS is on its way and copy and paste is finally here. I just don't know why it's taken so long... |

| ->> Thanks for breaking that down Baron! I've had FTP on the Go since reading that original thread and haven't been able to figure out how to get it to work (since my iPhone didnt show up as a shared device like some folks said it should) and this is a great way to bypass that little quirk |

->> Just added a script application that automates the creation of the AdHoc network on Macs. Super fast and easy. I've only tested it on Leopard Mac OSX.
Find the zipped application under Step 1 of the tutorial
http://tinyurl.com/lf9ff3
I'm curious to know if this way of transmitting has worked for folks and if the script works correctly for other versions of Mac OSX. |

| ->> Note that creation of an AdHoc network is also good if you need to sync Splash Data and similar pplications when a network isn't available. Things like Splash ID and Splash Shopper only sync over WiFi, not the USB cable. |

->> Anyone have luck with the original 1G iphones? I tried to add the tethering as directed on http://www.help.benm.at/help.php .
I tried it, and failed... Looks like it wont work on the edge network. Any ideas? Anyone have luck with FTP apps? At 6-7 bucks its very cheap, but I want to make sure they work before buying them. Specifically, Im looking at FTP On The Go for $6.99. |

| ->> After reading the article Bert posted, I dont think it'll make much difference. Less than 384 Kbps is a bit too slow. Perhaps an internet card is the better bet. |
