Refurbished Gear?

->> Okay so one way or the other I'll be getting another D3 this month. The real question is whether to buy NEW or Refurb. I have had phenomenal luck with my current D3 with a current click count of 470K with zero trips to the service center.
So for those of you who have bought a refurb D3 what kind of success have you had? When you got it was were the counter set to zero or were you able to get a actuation count? Is the battery new ?
Just looking for the good the bad and the ugly of going with a refurb over a new body. The price difference seems to be about $900 |

->> Every refurbished item that I have ever purchased (photo gear, pro audio/guitar, consumer electronics) has arrived looking and performing like new and these have typicaly had the full backing of the manufacturer's warranty.
If the refurbished D3 comes with a warranty, this sounds like a low risk opportunity to save $900. |

->> Eric,
Go for the refurb, just make sure it's not grey market. I've bought several refurbs over the years and have never had a problem. They all came looking like a new camera, new paperwork and the batteries held charges like new ones. I buy most of my refurbs through Cameta, so find a reputable dealer, but then you know all that stuff. |

| ->> I will second what John mentioned above. Although I don't have D3's I do have D300's. One was purchased new and the other was refurb. The refurb has performed like new. I cannot tell the difference between the two. Save the money and go with the refurb. Also, Cameta is a great store to work with. I've purchased several pieces of equipment from them over the years and found nothing to be wrong with the items upon receiving them. |

->> Eric, I actually had rather bad luck with D3 refurb before and while it might not be respresentative of what to expect from all of them, I figure its still worth sharing with you.
My refurb had the focus points all out of alligment with the viewfinder. I'm not sure if this is an issue with just the focus screen or not as I didnt really investigate it further, because the second issue, was that the battery was already 1/3rd gone on its condition gauge.
Just seemed like too many potential issues for saving $900, because even as a refurb its still a $3799 camera and I frankly expect a lot for my $3799
I ended up returning the camera to the dealer and got a refund. I then bought a D700 instead which has turned out to be a really nice camera and very versatile additional tool for me and for 50% the price of the refurb to boot. |

->> Jeff sounds like you got a bum body.....
The plan is to get this in the next 2 weeks and right now I have tournaments galore so testing the camera will be no issue. I know that I can easily get 5000 or more frames shot in one weekend between myself and letting one of the guys use it while I'm on break. So evaluation will be rather through. The only reason that I'm even considering the $900 savings is that I want a new 24-70 and the $900 is a good chunk of the cost of the lens.
Push comes to shove I'll buy both new. |

| ->> Probably half of the gear that I've purchased in the past years has been referbs... As long as you get them from a reputable dealer I would feel safe. |

->> Eric-
In my 30+ years of selling gear, and "Refurbished" products, especially from Nikon & Canon, I have ONLY had TWO issues with "Refurbished" cameras that I'm aware of.
My customers love saving some $$$ especially these days, so I always make them aware of what we have on hand. Keep in mind that with a Refurb'd" Nikon D3 or D700, the warranty is 90 Days vs. One year on a new box.
If you'd like, check in with me prior to your purchase, and I'd be happy to let you know what's on hand, such as D3's, D700's or SB-900's.

| ->> I just ordered ny first piece of refurbished gear from Adorama a 24-105 f4. I had been waiting on a new one but everyone is out. I read 5 reviews from people who have purchased the same refurbished units and all said they performed as new. The difference is the warranty as Jeff has said. It has a ninety day and it is from Adorama instead of Canon. |

| ->> Before you pull the trigger on a refurb purchase I would ask the dealer about their return policy on refurbs. I bought a refurbished D2h from Adorama. It arrived not working. When I called them up to return it they wouldn't accept it and made me ship it, at my own expense, to Nikon to get the warranty repair. |

->> I bought an original 1D from Louis Feldman at Samy's in LA. It was a factory refurb and it has since gone through hell and back (like most 1D's) and still takes the same pictures it took as when I opened the "Canon Refurbished" box it came with.
I was concerned with the 6 month warranty rather than the 1 year, but it has been 5 years without a hitch so far. |
