->> FTA:
"Publishing and media company Gannett Co. Inc., parent company of the Tallahassee Democrat, announced today that it will reduce staffing by about 1,400 employees in the company’s U.S Community Publishing division, which includes 85 daily newspapers."
so it looks like about 16 people from each paper if it was divided equally. Really a shame. |

| ->> Well, the stockholders are, like a lot of stockholders, losing their shirts. In August of 2000, Gannett shares were running around $90 per. They closed at $3.66 today. |

->> Andrew got room for me and the rest of the shooters at the American at the bar ?... ? It is like a Morgue waiting room in the office...I am sitting in my office working the night shift and all I can see if downtrodden faces of reporters and copy editors.
I guess we will wait and see... If it happens it happens and it was fun while it lasted. |

->> Painful.
Starting to sound like a billboard near SeaTac Airport in Seattle in 1971 "Will the last person to leave Seattle turn out the lights" |

->> Sigh ... just terrible news in a year (and for a company, no less) that doesn't need any more of that sort of thing, let me tell you.
My thoughts and prayers are with all my friends and colleagues toiling away at Gannett.
And good luck to us all.

| ->> I will never understand why they always announce this stuff a week or so before it happens. Now everyone is worked up and they just make matters worse. There is no good way of doing what they are doing. They should just come in and do it instead of saying they are doing it and putting everybody on edge just before the holiday. I know thats not a good way of doing it either but it eliminates all they anxiety. Sometimes I think they just like to toy with people. |

->> It is tough to see my paper like this, it is tougher that this is the 3rd time in a year that I have seen the same look on my friends faces.
The worry and dread is unbeleivable it blows your concentration. It is all you can think about. I shot a fire this morning and got a great shot of a dog being rescued from a house fire but it did not even register until I saw it on the page.
I keep waiting for "Nearer my God to Thee" to come across the intercom
Good Luck to all the other shooters at Gannett Papers.
Something me and fellow American shooter and SS member Erin Parker talked about was that it did not matter if we were PJ's at a paper or PJ's witout a job we would always be PJ's that is something that a company can not take away from you. |

Matthew, that is SO RIGHT. Regardless of what happens, these situations are the result of stupidity and greed intersecting with a shift in how Americans get their news. If they hadn't borrowed Billions, promised to get 30% ROI and basically not acted like fools, they'd be in a lot better place and so would the industry.
It's their failure - editors, writers and photographers just get to catch the spears. |
