Help needed: pre-pay SIM only in U.S.

->> I'm looking to pick the brains of the SS.com community here

I've got an assignment that has me in the US from 8th - 14th July and, rather than paying a fortune in international roaming charges for those calls I need to send and receive whilst in the States, I thought about picking up a pre-pay SIM for my cellphone and using that instead.

Sure, I'd have a different number but that mild inconvenience would be offset by the call / text savings.

Given that I know nothing of which service providers in the US offer the best deals on these sort of things, I'm hoping that someone can chip in on the boards here and point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

->> Your main options for GSDM phones with prepaid SIMS here are AT&T and T-Mobile. I've used a prepaid from T-Mobile before and it worked ok.

Sprint and Verizon are CDMA so they don't have the SIMS you need. Not sure about smaller prepaid carriers like Cricket.

->> For you it's ATT&T or T-Mobile (GSM) with AT&T being bigger and having a larger coverage area. Check out their respective web sites to see if their coverage matches your needs.

Bear in mind that, unlike Europe, US cell phones are charged for both incoming AND outgoing calls. Budget accordingly.

One alternative is to but a cheapo pay-as-you-go cell phone from any of the major operators and write it off when you leave. You can get a basic Samsung with a pre-paid plan from Verizon for $50. They have a $3.99/day unlimited plan that would cost you a total of around $80.

->> AT&T prepaid SIM are only $15, which is all you will need since I assume you already have an unlocked GSM quad band phone. If you add a $25 card of time to the SIM, it would be valid for 90 days, which would be sufficient for your trip.

You will probably need to go to an actual AT&T store to buy just a sim, but otherwise Target/Wal-Mart/7-11/etc. all have top off cards, plus el-cheapo phone+SIM packages for around $30-40 if you can't find an AT&T store.

->> I'll second what Jim said about double-checking their coverage areas first. Don't assume that because you might be working in a large city that the coverage will be good. I moved to Lincoln, Nebraska (a city of about 250,000) a few years ago, and had to buy out of my AT&T contract because their coverage was horrible.

->> Thanks to all so far.

My trip is taking me to Las Vegas with a short connection in Philadelphia.. a total of three hours to clear immigration, re-check my bags and get my next flight.

I'm sure there are countless locations in Vegas where I could pick up a pre-pay SIM and I'm guessing coverage will be fine for the most part too... I'll check out the websites of the suggested networks to see what best fits the bill.

Thanks for all your help!

->> You could also get a Virgin Mobile (on Sprint network) phone for $10-20 bucks and $50 for a month of unlimited calling.
