R-Strap Experience?
Kolman Rosenberg, Photographer
Mentor | OH | USA | Posted: 12:14 PM on 06.29.09
->> I've been looking for a strap that is both comfortable on the neck AND non-slip on the shoulder. I've found comfortable straps like the Op-tech line and non slip straps like the Upstrap and Think Tank straps, but none of those seem to fill the bill for being both comfortable and non-slip.

The R-Strap has been out for a while now and looks like it would fill both of my desires but hanging the camera upside down by the tripod socket concerns me a little (it shouldn't, I sometimes carry the tripod/monopod over my shoulder with camera attached). I'm wondering if anyone has had some experience with the R-Strap yet? Specifically:

** Does the attachment bracket that screws into the tripod socket stay tight?
** Can you use a Manfrotto quick release plate D-ring to attach to the strap (they show that in their video)?
** Is the tripod socket on a pro camera built to suppport the weight of the camera and a long lens hanging upside down?

Anybody had any experiences good or bad?

Thanks

->> I've been using an R-strap for 2 months now and I love it.
While I have yet to use a Manfrotto quick release I've had the strap attached to both the lens and the camera body.
While it takes some getting use to the bracket does not loosen and I've yet to have any problems with the strap.
I have attached the hook to the lens strap brackets on my 300 just so I didn't have to keep moving the supplied bracket and the strap still work as well. I prefer not to stay attached to the body if I have my 300 attached and not on a mono-pod because it balances better.

->> I use it all the time. Depending on what I am shooting and which camera and lens I am using as my main setup I will have the other camera attached to the R strap. Sometimes I will have it attached to the tripod socket on a 70-200 and sometimes I attach it to the camera body itself with a 24-70 2.8 which is pretty heavy.
I have worn it all day in some cases and it is very comfortable but does shift around sometimes and requires readjustment. It is the best way I have found to carry 2 cameras.
One problem I have had is that I have become used to wearing it and sometimes when I do not have it on I find myself wanting to let go of the camera and then I realize it is not attached but I have not dropped a camera yet.

So far most of the feedback from this thread and the previous one have been mostly positive.

I saw the Cottoncarrier about a week ago too. Interesting concept and looks well made. For me, I don't think I'd like the thing strapped around my chest. I think it would be hot.

I'm leaning toward trying the R-strap.

You don't put the R-strap into the camera socket, you put it into the lens socket of your long lens.

->> Yeah, I guess I misstated that. Some short lenses are pretty heavy too, my 17-35 2.8 is hefty and of course doesn't have a lens socket like my longer 70-200 2.8.

Anyway, the tripod socket doesn't seem to be a problem for anyone.

->> Love mine...been using it about 2 months. No problems with it becoming loose or coming unhooked.
When using a bigger telephoto, you'd want to screw it into the lens mount rather than the bottom of camera body. Which I have done a few times on my 300 2.8 and it's not bad at all. On 70-200 2.8 I've just kept it on the body simple because I don't make it a habit to keep the ring on the lens.

I eventually had to tie the strap in a knot. I emailed the company with the problem but never received a response…. I’ll sell it to you if you want it... 1/2 price

->> Hey Kolman, I was on the fence as well. About four months ago I made the purchase an do not regret it at all. My recent trip to Indy put the strap to the test for comfort. All day (8 Hours) with various lens and it passed with flying colors. I will say that i had mine slip a bit at first, but after a few times adjusting it has stayed in the same position. I got the email about the latch that needs replacing but have not seen anything in the mail. I would recommend the R-Strap.
Cheers-
Michael

Thanks Tony, for the comment on the 70-200 buttons, I'll have to watch out for that.

I also wonder about using it with a vertical grip. Will it get in the way?

Like it as well; however, when using it with the shorter lenes like 24-70 (R-Strap in the tripod socket) I do not like shooting vertical (it gets in the way).

Is there a work-a-round for this?

Ken
