This event was certainly an interesting experience in watching how different outlets handle news. TMZ was reporting Michael as dead well before anyone else, with all other outlets slowly going from "hospitalized" to "coma" to the final outcome. |

This will be one of those days like August 16, 1977--the day Elvis died..people can recall where they were when they heard the news..
I was at an area K-Mart buying two assemble-it-yourself bookcases.. I was walking past the TV sets when I saw the first news reports about Elvis.. |

9/11 I was getting ready for my 10 a.m. communication theories class in college. Needless to say I never went to class that day.
And today I was in the newsroom and it came across TMZ first then the AP wire.

I realize that it was not all his doing, he was brought up in terrible conditions, he had millions of hangers-on like Elvis did, and he probably lost the handle on his life years ago...what a waste.
He goes into the file with Elvis, Cobain, Joplin, Morrison, and all of the others... |

Of the three events you listed:
The O.J. verdict--I was at the local pharmacy to pick up some medicine for my mom.
The 89 SF Earthquake--I was getting ready to pencil over the page negatives of our weekly paper. I had my portable TV set with me and was getting ready to watch the World Series game while I opaqued the paste-up lines from the page negatives.
9-11? I had just gotten back to the house after a quick trip to the neighborhood grocery store around 9 a.m... I flipped on the TV set and saw the live news reports.. Neither of the twin towers had collapsed when I tuned in.. |

->> OJ Verdict--- Election primary, I was a campaign manager getting a box count and delivering coffee.... I still remember that I was at the Ward 1A poll.
9/11 --- I was just getting home from working an overnight in the ER. My wife called to tell me that something was happening in NYC and I turned on the TV. My brother in law lived in Brooklyn at the time. I remember breaking the news to my wife over the phone when the Pentagon was hit and her relaying it to some of her co-workers. I remember a woman in the background screaming in her office. Her (the screamer) brother was a grounds keeper at the Pentagon and that's how she got the news that her brother's building had been attacked. We later found out that it was his day off.
Elvis--- I was on my living room floor watching TV when they broke in with the news. My mom was beyond heartbroken. |

On more than one occasion allegations of child molestation were brought up against him only to have the charges miraculously dropped. Just so happened that accomapanied a nice little pay off for someone too.
One story I saw tonight said he was a very lonley person and sometimes went days without speaking to anyone but children. Now I ask you, is that anywhere near normal? Who else would dangle a child over a balcony and not really see anything wrong with it?
Dude was a whack job for the last 20 year at least. |

I recall the John Lennon story.. I was in my first year of graduate journalism studies. I was working on a content analysis study of ABC's Nightline.
I had not tuned in for the local news, so it was stunning to see Nightline doing a 30 minute report on Lennon's shooting.
My memory's a little fuzzy, but I think CNN made its debut a few months earlier, but CNN wasn't widely available and it wasn't a big player for breaking news stories as it is today.. |

From a quick glance it looks like most led with Michael and sidebarred Farah. A sudden, unexpected death wins over a slow, expected one. |

I don't think the manner of death has as much to do with it as does the fact that they were in completely different leagues in terms of celebrity. Jackson was a worldwide music star up there with Elvis and the Beatles as a cultural icon. Farrah was a domestic star for a few years whose highlight in terms of appeal and fame was (appropriately for this board) a swimsuit photo.
Though I don't remember anything in terms of where I was when OJ stuff was going on, 9/11 and the death of Kurt Cobain are different stories. Even though I wasn't a fan of Nirvana or really hip to the grunge movement at the time (while living in Seattle!), I still remember where I was when it was announced that a body was found in Cobain's house. 9/11, ironically, helped get me in the door shooting my first official sports gig. I was on a cruise that week leading up to a college football game down in Miami. The game was canceled and rescheduled for December, and I was able to come back down to Florida to photograph the make-up, my first game as a "sports shooter." |

When I was in middle school, my neighbor died in a plane crash and there were news trucks staked outside their house for a couple days just waiting for his wife to walk outside of the house and interview her.
I can't imagine how horrible it must be to live under a microscope your whole life like MJ did. Not being able to trust anyone because they want your money and everything else that goes along with being that famous.
As for Neverland and the doctor, I'm sure there will be lots of legal battles. There is going to be a huge fight over all his money, assets, and music rights. Doesn't MJ own the rights to most of The Beatles songs too? |

->> Michael M., your giving it 3 days more than you need to. Suspicions were being raised yesterday before they pronounced him dead.
Beatles songs - he did own them, not sure if that still hold true.
Elvis - had just arrived at my freshman year of college, was in my dorm at Southern Illinois.
911 - just got out of a meeting at work and we had it on the monitors in our command center.
The day Kennedy was shot - at my grandmothers for the day
1989 Bay area quake - I had just started a 2nd shift job and got a call from a friend who was trying to reach his wife and needed patched through. He was in the Bay area, his wife here at home. He was ok, thank goodness.
John Lennon - don't recall where I was, but the feeling I had was horrible and then increased when I found out he'd been gunned down. -Imagine- Nuff said.
Jody, I get your point about the 3's. but it depends on where you start counting! Add in Carradine and you can make it to #4.
Farrah - one of the first for me that didn't need a last name, much less one with a hyphen. One of my first real jobs, the boss had the poster on the back of the office door. If he was still the manager there, it would still be hanging. RIP, Farrah |

->> I've already heard the first conspiracy story.
Seems that since Paul McCartney is co-owner of the Beatles library (bought a half share when MJ was in $$ trouble, I guess) and perhaps, maybe, could be in the will to get the other half on MJ's death, perhaps Paul hired a hit man to do him in.
It may not be the wackiest, but it may be first.
I don't remember if I heard it last night or this morning though.
The whole situation is hard to comprehend. As a DJ, I grew up playing Michael's music, then had to watch as his persona went south.
It's a weird end to a weird 20+ years, and like Elvis, is just the beginning of his 'after life.'
And yes, I feel for Farrah's family, given that the fact she died on June 25th will always likely be a footnote (at best) in the 'this day in history' things.
But for the time being, I think they are likely happy to be left a little bit alone to grieve. |

L. Harvey Oswald: I was shooting hoops in the driveway with my brother and my friend when I heard my mom scream from the living room where she was watching his transfer on TV.
Martin Luther King, Jr: I was in Chapel Hill, NC getting ready for school in the morning when it came over the radio.
Robert Kennedy: Don't remember specifically, but I was in jr high.
Nixon Resignation: I was on the air on the 7pm to midnight shift at WSGN in Birmingham, AL when his speech was broadcast. We ran it live, the only time in it's history WSGN ran a live speech.
Elvis: I was a DJ at WIFE in Indianapolis and had just arrived at work when the news hit the AP wire.
J. Lennon: I was driving through a torrential rainstorm in Dallas, TX when it came over the radio. |

->> "correct me if Im wrong but debt gets passed to next of kin if you die"
In my understanding this is very incorrect. The debt belongs to the estate and would be offset by the assets within the estate. If the debts exceed the assets, well the kids get nothing in the way of inheritance, but they don't end up having to pay off dad's debts from their own assets.
(The above is not legal advise - consult appropriate legal counsel for the full interpretation.) |
