400 f2.8L IS - Sticky collar bearing
Marcell van Aswegen, Photographer

->> Hi all, Im from South Africa and I just joined SS this week. Im looking forward meeting new photographers and learning from them through this cool website.

I have a problem with my 400's collar, it seems as if the bearing is starting to go. Its not gliding in a fluid motion as it used to. When using it on my monopod its difficult to rotate it with precision, its almost as if it skips a few cm's if you try an rotate it just a little. Any idea if this could be the bearing? Any idea if there is actually a bearing inside the closed collar? And id like to hear from someone who had similar problems before.

Thanx in advance

->> Marcell, welcome to SS. I did this fix last year and the lens works great and still smooth to this day. This was the post on SS http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=26905, and this one showed the ball bearings http://www.sportsshooter.com/briancripe/400bearings/index.html. The most important part that was not mentioned in any of the articles was that the philips head screw driver tip should be a JIS standard (Japanese Industry Standard) http://www.micro-tools.com/store/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=XPT-2-5, you can use a regular screw driver but you have to be very careful cause the chance of stripping the screw is higher, I also used this http://www2.dupont.com/Consumer_Lubricants/en_US/products/dryfilm.html. The fix was easier then I expected and only took about 45 min, I also ordered extra bearings since the lens started getting sticky after a year, but the new bearings seem to be much better quality, http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=product&id=3166&n=SMR74

Sorry i should have searched the forum first. I read through all the threads and subthreads, and got all the info I need.

I'll open the collar, insspect the bearings, and order replacements, and give feedback.

Thanx for the help

But, some versions of the 400mm 2.8IS do not have the bearing window under the silver plate on the collar.... just depends on when yours was made.

->> Thanx Richard, i havent been able to open up the nameplate, I cant find the correct screwdriver. I will go the the tool quip guys this week and source the correct tools to open, as i dont want to damage/strip the screws on a lens that expensive. Thanx for the info. I hope mine has a bearing collar, so that i can service it myself, because theres definitely something wrong. My lens is an early 2000 model i think

->> Does anyone know if the 300 2.8 IS has the bearings/collar assembly the same as the 400 and the bearing sizes etc. My 300 was great in the beginning and then like a lot of other folks, it has gotten to where it's not as smooth.

Thanks for any help.

->> Marcell, as I noted above, I used this to get all the screws off even the name plate - http://www.micro-tools.com/store/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=XPT-2-5 - if you can't find that try a #0 or #00 in a precision screw driver set, but be very careful as these do not have a blunt tip and may cause to strip out the top.

->> Marcell,

If the early version 400/2.8 IS is like my 500/4 IS, if you remove the 6 screws on the ring just behind the collar, remove the ring and the collar slides off the lens. Canon uses a dry powder "lubricant" which can get gunked up and make the lens hard to rotate. I would think a good camera shop in your area could clean it out and replace the dry lubricant. YMMV

I'm not sure the silicon spray will work. The powder is more like graphite powder, but it is gray in color, not messy like real graphite.

->> Marcell,

I fixed my buddies 400 that did not have bearings in it, I used the Dupont dry teflon lube and it worked just fine, It comes out in a liquid form, I first cleaned the collar and the area covered by the collar with goo gone, then made sure that all the goo gone was all off with a nice clean towel, the dry teflon lube comes out wet so be careful when spraying it on the the lens and a little inside the collar let it dry a couple of minutes till it starts looking kinda waxy and then assemble, you should be good to go.
