Calling all Freelancers

->> I shot what I thought, and the photo editor of the local newspaper thought was a news worthy photo of a guy cycling around the world. I was transferred over to the city desk only to find out they are not able to accept freelance photos, expect for accidents where it was not possible to get a staffer over to it....I'm guessing its the union shutting it down.
Have you ever come across this? Is the freelance market have any life left? |

->> Freelance isn't dead. However, I would say that so many newspapers are struggling to just stay open and have no budget except for the necessities.
I am hearing about other publications on the brink of disaster because their clients who signed contracts with them for advertising cannot honor them and causing untold havoc.
Paul Melcher wrote recently on this topic from a slightly different angle on Black Star's blog: http://rising.blackstar.com/five-reasons-war-photographers-are-an-endangere... |

| ->> Scott, my small local paper is not a union shop but that has basically been our policy for a couple of decades now. |

->> Every publication is different. For best results you should set up a relationship with the publication BEFORE you submit something. Most have paperwork and agreements that need to be signed before they can pay you anything. That is not a fast process and is not usually something the guy at the desk can initiate - it almost always has to come from the director of photography or someone at that level.
If you have something really unique and time-sensitive (i.e. only picture of a plane crash, etc.) you can sometimes get fast-tracked, but if you have something THAT unique you'll probably make more money shopping it to someone OTHER than a daily newspaper. |

| ->> I agree with Mr. Harpe...I have an agreement with a daily that I worked out in advance. My contract even says I can send stuff to them that they haven't asked for! |

| ->> I have worked out contracts with several daily's in the area, But the one paper that has a strangle hold on the city is a union shop and I was just trying to push in...I guess I need a more drastic event. I ran into a South Korean man who is biking around the world....not a 4 alarm fire |
