->> I have a few questions about school photography.
What do you charge the school for portraits?
What about school dances?
I'm more interested in if it is normal to charge a fee or do you usally just make money off of print sales?
Feel free to email or call me if you don't want to discuss in open forum

->> Jeff I don't know of ANY situation where the schools pay a company to come out to shoot class and individuals. It's normally the other way around with splits going as high as 50/50 PLUS additional 'perks' if it is a big enough school.
I know of cases where the winning studio 'donated' a complete computer lab to the school PLUS a commision in return for the schools class, individual, yearbook and proms. The computer lab seems to be one of the 'normal' perks and given how often I've heard them doing it, they must have a deal with dell to buy up 20 refurbs and a server / IT hardware.
All of the gigs that I know of the studios are only making money on the sale of product to the students and family.
Some of the other services that I have heard tacked on:
Free IDs printed for the entire school
Free prints for the principal's office as well as the offices of the guidance councilors.
A complete scoreboard system for the football field.
It is one of the MOST cut throat segments of business that I know of. Competing studios will actually show up at 'your' school to shoot events or games and 'donate' posters and banners to the school to keep their name at the top of the list. Good Luck! |
