->> Whats the deal with this lens - OUT OF STOCK everywhere. A call to TOKINA says they can;t keep up with demand yada yada yada.......
Is this particular lens REALLY that good?
[I have been casually looking for a nikon mount version the past month to use at MotoGP at Laguna Seca................]
The event is 2 weeks away and I am starting to [gasp] wonder if I am going to have to spend double that amount on a similar range NIKKOR lens.
Anyone know where one of these is sitting on the shelf IN STOCK?
Anyone who has bought this lens PLEASE comment on it.
Thank you |

| ->> If it is not "really that good" do you really want it? |

->> Its a pretty decent lens, not as good as a Nikon 14-24, which really is just unreal in terms of corner sharpness for an UWA, but the Tokina is a nice mix between speed, being the only f2.8 DX lens out there and also optics that are a notch above the likes of the Sigma 10-20 and similar offerings for not a huge price increase.
Its also nice because it can work on FX at 16mm which gives it a bit of added versatility if you own 2 different camera systems
Try a brick and mortar shop though, Ive had better luck with small shops when it comes to finding hard to stock items than the big chains that have hundreds of people across the country all jumping on the next shipment. |

->> I bought the ProMaster 11-18 f/4.5 for around $600 and couldn't be happier. It's got CA in the corners, but it's not that noticeable unless you have real high-contrast subject matter. The Nikon is obviously the superior lens, but if you can live with a mid-range quality lens then the Pro Master is pretty good.
It's my understanding that Tokina makes the Pro Master, so look for the PM brand and you'll be getting about the same thing. |

->> The Tokina 11-16/f2.8 is a damn fine lens - except it has a propensity to flare something awful if you're not careful.

Bert's probably right - if you can afford a D3X, you can certainly afford a 14-24 and don't need the DX wide angle capability. But not many of us can afford just the 14-24, much less the D3X to go with it. $600 vs $1,800? Now you know why it is out of stock. |

->> Matt, you ordered it, but did they have it in stock and ship it to you? I called Samy's, and B&H, and Adorama.... none in stock. Anyways, I hoped to have this lens for some shots I have been dreaming up to do at the MotoGP at Laguna next weekend [yes my credentials have been confirmed]. My 10.5 f2.8 is too round for what I want to do, my 17-55 f2.8 is not wide enough. I am trying to avoid spending 2K on the big gun nikkor even though that is the path I have taken on all my lens' to date... I can't justify it right now. I have read very good reviews on this little Tokina so wanted to give it a try.
* oh, I don;t have a D3X, I have a D300. I also have $600 to spend, not $2K at the moment. |

| ->> FYI I grew tired of waiting / searching and needed something in this range for this weekend [MotoGP] so went over to Camera West and brought home a Nikkor 12-24 f4 AF-S G ED which should do the trick nicely and might be as good or better than the Tokina. |
