"I can't believe those are real" kind of photos...
Kevin Leas, Photographer, Assistant

->> A few days ago, I stumbled across these photos via the Boston Globe. After hitting the fourth one down, and continuing on with 5 & 6, my jaw just dropped. These look more like they're screen grabs from some apocalyptic movie, and not actual photos of a natural event. Anyway - the shots are here: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/06/chaiten_volcano_still_active.html

Are there other photos like this that you've seen and just thought "...wow..." when you took them in? I'm not just talking about photos that are great, but the shots that seem almost inhuman or otherworldly. I'd love to see more stuff like this - anyone have any links?

->> I agree, those are some pretty wild shots, but I don't think they're that out there. # 5 & 6 remind me of some of the stuff of ball lightning I've seen before. Mother nature is a weird weird thing when she wants to be.

->> kevin, thanks for sharing but to be honest with you....these are "F8 and be there" photos. Look up any major volcanic eruption in the last 20 years and you'll see great photos like these. As jaw dropping and pants wetting as they might have seemed to you, they are really pretty common photos for a volcanic eruption. that said, I would probably cut off my little finger to have one of those photos......

->> I disagree Chuck about your analysis, I just googled "volcano storm" and the noted photo is dominating the first three to four pages of the image search.

http://images.google.com/images?q=volcano%20storm&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi

Granted not every great storm photo from the last 20 years is online. But...

"...they are really pretty common photos for a volcanic eruption. that said, I would probably cut off my little finger to have one of those photos..."

You make it sound like these are an everyday shot. Yet, you admit you'd cut off your "little finger" for a "pretty common" photo. Yes, I understand you are being tongue and cheek with that saying. However, your statement becomes confusing because it's obviously a photographic feat/marvel, yet you'd like to have a shot like that in your portfolio.

Out of sheer curiosity, which is it Chuck? A good photo or a bad?

I think F8 or not, it's pretty clear the impact of the image. Because usually when you say you'd love to have that shot in your portfolio, it's a definitive documentation of something to be proud of.

I've had lots of "sideline parents," taking sports for example, say, "Oh, you got that shot because you were there." But isn't preparation and positioning half the battle?

Respectfully,

Corey

P.S. Thanks for posting this Kevin. And thank you Carlos Gutierrez for capturing such raw beauty and power.

Beautiful photos, I agree they are rather sci-fi looking.

Regardless, they're some of the most memorable nature images I've seen in recent years. I haven't seen anything like this before or since... certainly not "common" stuff.
