->> I'm researching SD-based HD camcorders and was wondering if any of them can be edited in FCP natively.

I'm trying to look for ways around having to have the AVCHD files transcoded to the Apple Intermediate Codec or Prores 422.

What's the point of recording to SD cards if you have to go through logging and transferring at 1x speed? (more of a rhetorical statement)

Are there any out there that use a different codec. I noticed some Panasonics are able to record to H.264 or am I reading the specs wrong.

->> The reason you have to transcode things shot to cards is they are HDV that is then compressed again into AVCHD. They must be uncompressed, back to HDV to be native for FCP. Maybe one day Apple will add that format but dont hold your breath.

The alternative is to shoot DV to cards.

->> The new JVC's will do what your are talking about but be aware that they are not as good as some other cameras in low light. We tested the GY-HM700U and it is about a stop or 2 worse than the Sony EX-3. There is also a lot of vertical smear when shooting headlights, streetlights, etc. at night. The model we tested was a very early production model, so maybe they will fix the later versions but those reasons are why we decided on the EX-3. I don't have a lot of experience with the lower end JVC cameras. I've read about ways to shoot the EX-3 with SD cards or cheaper SXS cards that are close to the SD card price. I know the Sony EX-3 works with FCP
