I guess these have been out for a while but I just came across this new one which it sounds like can communicate directly with a computer "ad hoc"
I've many a times wanted to have a wi-fi transmitter, both when I shot Canon and now Nikon, but both companies transmitter units are quite pricey and also rather bulky.
These Eye-Fi cards are totally internal and have a listed retail of $149 so they solve both those problems.....if they work.
Now I'm sure the range is pretty small and I dont expect to be shooting on the field and sending images back to the pc in the media room. But what I'd hopefully be able to do is use such a wireless connection for things like portrait or product shoots where I've in the past shot tethered with a USB cable.
While that works fine the cable drives me crazy and if I could "cut the cord" for $149 I'll be the first in line, again, assuming these things work as advertised with no major catches
Then of course there is the issue is that they only come in SD size and my D3/D700/D300 only take CF cards so an adapter would be required. Does it even work with an adapter ? I don't know so I might be dead in the water right off the bat but I'm still very intrigued thus far.
So if anyone has got their hands on one of these, or even the earlier versions that required a wireless router, I'd still be quite intrested in hearing how the transfer rates and range were and if you think it could prove viable in a professional working enviroment |

->> Thats great info, thank Nigel
I guess I'll just have to try it and see what type of range I can get using an adapter. As long as I can get 30 feet or so I'll be happy for the intended usage of simply being able to do away with the USB cable for tethered shooting |

->> I think some of the answers to your questions are tucked away in the the troubleshooting part of the Eye Fi FAQ section.

It still seems to be set up for the old version but they refer to the issues with SD adaptors and the range ('estimated' as 15m+ indoors and 30m+ outdoors) |

->> I have used the older version for over a year, mostly on convention center floors where I'm 30-50' from the receiving laptop. It works. Every so often if seems to hang for a minute or two, but then it picks up & starts transmitting again.
Looking forward to the new version allowing camera to laptop direct transmission without the need for an intervening router. BUT, why it is necessary to be connected to the internet and eye-fi's server to change configurations (change from PC #1 to PC #2) is beyond me and a definite negative. |

->> I agree Ken, that seems quite the pointless and annoying step and I almost thought it was a dealbreaker when it first made it sound like even though you could have an ad hoc connection direct to the pc, the pc still needed to connected to the internet, and not via wi-fi, but rather an ethernet or phone-as-modem connection, yikes.
Reads like once you set it up though your then good to go without the connection unless you need to make changes. |
