->> In a move that I am sure will make many on here happy (based on comments that always come up) Apple, at their World Wide Developer Conference, just announced a 13 inch MacBook Pro. It is basically an updated version of the 13" unibody MacBook but with Firewire 800. It starts at $1,199.
All MacBook Pros are being updated and are available today with lower prices. They all support up to 8GB of RAM (even the 13"), have a built-in SD card reader and have a new display with a 60% increase in the displayed color gamut. The 15" models do lose the ExpressCard slot. They all have the new battery that is not user replaceable (like the 17" models have had for a while) and they claim the 15" will get 7 hours and 1,000 recharges. |

->> The 13" MBP is great for those who are looking for a good 12" PowerBook replacement.
I just hope the new 13" display's viewing angle is leaps and bounds better than the previous 13" MB. I had problems with viewing angle and looking at correct color/exposure over the weekend with a client while shooting tethered. |

Oh how I love glare, totally incorrect colour correcting, not being able to work in the sun and seeing my reflection and shirt reflected in my screen as I try and edit. |

->> I am SO Happy I waited! The 13" screen will be much improved and FW 800 is great to have. I hope it brings back the option of Target disk mode. There is also an SD memory card slot and now includes lighted keyboard for even the base model! The starting price is $100 less as well! Faster processors too. 7 hours battery life with new battery- non user removable. 2 gigs ram on standard model accepts up to 8 gigs!
15" model has an improved screen as well and SD card slot. Something to note about the 15" model at the base price. It also uses shared memory for the video card. You must pay extra for a dedicated video card with its own memory. For most it is not a big deal, it is if you are into games or video editing where you would certainly notice a difference. 4 gigs ram standard and takes up to 8 gigs. The battery is not removable but has up 7 hours battery life.
The biggest negative for some may be the non-removable battery. It is supposed to last 1,000 charge cycles or up to 5 years of service. I am sure there will be third party solutions for external power. |

| ->> Just wondering how you are supposed to transmit using this laptop when wi-fi isn't available. With no express card slot and no solution offered, this laptop seems a step backward. Too bad because I'm a big Apple fan. They brought back FW because so many people were upset at its loss, maybe they'll bring back the slot for an air card, too. |

| ->> @Ron - you might look into the MiFi from Novatel. Served through Sprint and Verizon. It's a little broadband wireless hub that makes the CradlePoint look like an AM radio next to XM. |

->> Apple isn't kidding with their claims of longer battery life on the new (non user removable) battery.
My wife bought the 17-inch unibody with that new battery design and that thing just wont quit. Apple's claim that the battery will last three times longer before needing to be replaced is just icing in the cake.
Yes, you have to take the computer to an Apple authorized store change the battery but those batteries will be recycled properly and there should be fewer of them.
Bottom line, I'm sold on Apple's new battery design/policy |

->> Daniel,
I think Ron was asking about when there is no WiFi signal available now that there is no express card slot.
Ron,
USB internet everywhere cards/sticks have been around for a while and are much more common than express cards. They also work with Apple's (past & present) consumer laptops. |

It is the Macbook Air and was released before all the other netbooks. |

->> Sheen: The 13" Aluminum now has: a professional quality screen (like MacBook Air), lighted keyboard, an SD card slot, Firewire 800, faster processors and a 7 hour battery for $100 less than before. I would say that is a major improvement. If you are an NPPA member, you can get a discount from the Business Apple Store!
Many online retailers are already discounting the new models. |

No it wasn't. The eeePC beat it by about a year. |

->> Debra--
I don't recall where I read it so a reference isn't possible, but while reading about the release of the MBP with a 13.3" screen, I saw a quote from Steve Jobs saying he didn't believe Apple could build a quality laptop for under $500.
That pricepoint (and below) is one of the key features of the current netbooks.
My daughter has a 13" iBook which is essentially the same dimensions as the new small MBP. My old 12" PowerBook G4 is smaller and is likely the closest thing to a netbook for me. |

->> I wish Apple would make a small netbook as well, the Air does not compare you cannot put that computer in your fanny pack or chestvest and carry it with you still need a larger bag just because of the size, the weight is not the issue its the large size. Not to mention the much increased price. Why can't Apple make one for $1000 any Apple user would pay that price for one instead of trying to use a PC, as a journalist you always have to have a computer and don't always want to have to carry a backpack with you at all events and these new netbooks are perfect for a journalist on the move. I am planning on getting one but will have to learn how to use a PC never have owned one before. The 13" was a good step but still not what most of the people are looking for, if you already own a 15" you are probably not going to spend the money for not much of a smaller computer in size or weight, just don't gain much. I also beleive that they could build a quality laptop that could compete in price somewhere around $500 they are building a phone that can do almost everything for a lot less, they could build a small laptop with not as much hardware as their larger units.
All this just my 2 cents.

->> Just by looking at the Dell Mini line and the HP mini line, and people that have installed mac osx on them, shows that it can be done. I paid 331 dollars for my Dell Mini 9, I already had a copy of leopard that I used to install on it and in a few hours of owning my mini, I had a perfectly capable machine of running osx. Not only does it run smooth, but it boots faster than my iMac and my girlfriends macbook pro. It can be done if apple wants too, the fact is they don't want too.
Putting a 5-7 pound laptop in my bag was getting tiresome, my 2.21 pound netbook, works fine for typing, surfing the web and transmitting. Hell I even got tethering to work on my iPhone last night and I surfed with it for a few just for the heck of it.
Here is a screenshot, running PM on it even:
