| ->> When things like this are reported as news and put on the internet as sarcasm or whatever it is terrible. Are we going to put under the microscope everything we do or kids do. As a kid I liked gadgets. for a year I bugged my father for a camera he got me one when I was 12. By the time I hit 13 was hooked and never looked back. I would hate to be the kid in that story. |

Although I still have that first picture I truly wish my mom had let me keep the one of the 12 or so Secret Service Agents all standing around a swimming pool pissing in it. (mom dated one of the agents so access began at 7) |

Its just satire poking fun at something people do when they're young. Becoming obsessed over some pursuit and dropping it after awhile to purse something else. Its a part of growing up and its something I'm SURE all of us can remember doing. |

Reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy quotes from Stewie: "Ooh, you took a black and white picture of a lawn chair and its shadow and developed it at Sav-On. You must be so brooding and deep." |

->> This brings back memories..
Back in the summer of 1971, I bought my first 35mm SLR--a Mamiya/Sekor 500TL with a 50/2 lens. I believe it cost me about $140.. I'd saved about $120 from mowing lawns that summer. My mom paid the $20 difference. I think I also got a couple of rolls of Tri-X film.
The very first picture I shot with the camera was of my mom and dad sitting on the living room sofa not long after we got back from buying the camera. My dad was grumbling that within a year, the camera would be on the shelf collecting dust..
As it turned out, from the summer of 1971 to the summer of 1977 when my dad died, I made several thousand dollars with my camera shooting photos in college--for the school PR dept.. The Sports Information Office, the school newspaper, and other side jobs..
I don't know what the true return on investment was for the $140 camera I bought. It would get whittled down a bit because of purchases of flash units and zoom telephoto lenses.. But still, I made a substantial amount of money for a college kid back in the mid 70s.
Father's Day is a couple of weeks away.. I'm sure if my dad was still living, I'd present him with some type of picture. It was great to hear him brag to friends and neighbors about "what a great photographer" I was..
People shouldn't put down a kid for having a keen interest in any type of hobby. You let the kid find their way around and grow their interest. It might not work out, but the kid will always remember of how supportive a parent or mentor a person was.. |

They presented the "history" of The Onion (all fictional), presented some of their articles, and did a Q&A. Probably the funniest two hours of my life. I'd strongly suggest that people check the site once a week for the new horoscopes. Amazing stuff. |

| ->> Well forgive me for not knowing of a stupid joke site. By the way I travel all the time out of Idaho. I lived in NYC till I 10 years ago.My wife died last year a victim of alcoholism and a lifetime of negativity. Her family treated her with extreme negativity. A sister that made her feel like she was just worth cleaning toilets a brother that molested her. Parents that refused there taxes so she could not apply to college.Childrenfrom a first marraige and a husband that treated her miserbly so she choose alcohol as a way out of that misery. The reaction I have Those that find a way to make fun of me for not knowing what the onion site is about. You know a lot of people have been saying sportsshooter is not what it use to be in terms of the articles I disagree in terms of how people can try to be vicious well ???? You never know what making fun of someone will do to them. |

David sorry about loosing your wife. Alcohol is a SAD and TERRIBLE disease for all involved.
Folks, I dont know one coffee drink from the next one since I have never drank it. But I dont need 20 reminders of what latte is. In fact latte just means milk...really.. nothing to do with coffee.
So who comes here to learn and who comes for target practice?
Hell lets start shooting..

->> Manuello, maybe if people didn't think they just HAD to write something all the time, this mess wouldn't have started in the first place. To use your analogy, people have rather itchy trigger fingers these days. Maybe a waiting period of a click here and there and a little 'journalistic' investigation would've saved a lot of grief.
But to accuse anyone of being so callous to not be affected by that post - that's just totally out of line. Perhaps just letting that little incident go into thread oblivion was best for everyone, instead of digging it up in some effort to teach us all a lesson. I guess I'm just a guilty of continuing to stir the pot. |

| ->> I had thought that ss was a site to learn and share info. I did not think of it as an extended frat house. Maybe there is a little too much of that these days. I did get a few emails of support and one apology that I greatly appreciated. I have not attacked anyone though it is tempting. I do not feel like I dugged myself further at all, I was trying to make a point of be careful who you are hitting on you know nothing of what is going on in there life. If the last thing you said to someone was insulting and they died before you could make it right how would you feel. Put down humor is something for kids or siblings. |

->> David,
I'm truly sorry to hear about your personal problems. Nobody should have to deal with what you and your late wife has dealt with. But to speak about such personal issues on a SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY message board and to somehow make fellow members feel responsible for you misery is ridiculous. To speak about your issues in such a PUBLIC forum is so entirely inappropriate, I have no words.
I wish you the best, but I think it might be better to seek some professional guidance in a different forum rather than express your PRIVATE, inner-most thoughts with the photographic world on these incredibly public, non-personal, sports photography message boards.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say we all wish you the very best.
Nobody here is putting you down.
Respectfully,
Robert |

| ->> David, with all due respect. You really need to seek professional help. I'm not trying to be an ass but you have really and truly gone off the deep end over this thread. No one has demeaned you. No one put anyone down. The Onion is a pretty well known sarcastic, biting, caustic "news" site not unlike Fox News but often more believable. This is a great site full of knowledge and information we ALL can use on a daily basis. I have learned a great deal from various members both old and new over the years. "Extended frat house"? that's truly a little coarse and totally off the mark. Why in the world should we not be allowed to enjoy something humorous? I mean, unless it's totally crass and in poor taste which happens occasionally, we, as human beings should be allowed to laugh. I am truly sorry for your troubles but maybe you should make an attempt at lightening up and seeing the glass as half full instead of completely empty. |

->> Dominik's thread began in good sport pointing to humor but without a obvious explanation and a mistaken assumption that everyone knew that the Onion is satirical news. It's the first time I heard of that newspaper!
This curve ball,ambiguity moved David to inject his own lessons in life to teach from his painful experience. Obviously his intentions were awesome.
At SS there is great information yet one of the most credible lessons in life is that of learning compassion. It is a sad person who does not have the ability to hear the heartbeat of a soul.
Understand that when a person is working through trauma it is going to come out at unexpected times and in unexpected ways. Be kind. Be patient.
Emotions cannot be shoved into a shoe box or compressed into a psychological meeting and telling someone to do that is just shocking.
We are the caretakers of this world and it's our duty to care for one another. Sometimes you just gotta put down the camera, put the shop talk on the platter and be flexible with what comes along.
David, there is never anything wrong with taking off the mask and being real. I know that you meant to explain what can happen when people mock others (you aren't alone,many didn't get that the article was a satire).
Life is Beautiful! Celebrate. |

Talk to a pro before you try and help someone this way. As for me Yes I am in therapy anyone who has been through what I have should be. As for the frat boys comment well I was remembering the crotch shot thread as well as what I was seeing here. As far as what is proper here, as photographers we ask the world to reveal themselves all the time, should we not do the same to help and change people. Thanks Sherrlyn and everyone who took the time to email me. If one person thinks a second before saying something I am glad I brought up what I did. To those of you who got angry well or questioned my motives I HOPE THAT CHANGES. I will not be responding to any more comments. David Seelig
