Back button focusing oddity

->> I've run into a problem with a 1D MkII N which I just obtained.

I'm trying to set it up for back button focusing. I set CFn-4 to 3 so that I can use the * button for focusing.

Here's the problem: in One-Shot, when I press the * button, the camera focuses, but I am unable re-focus at another point by pressing the * button again until the Focus Confirmation light (solid green circle) in the viewfinder goes out (approximately 6 seconds).

In AI Servo, when I press the * button, the camera focuses, but as I pan (with the * button released), the camera automatically refocuses on anything the AF point comes to rest on. This continues for approximately 6 seconds, at which time I have to press the * button again to refocus the camera and experience another 6 seconds worth of auto-focusing.

By setting CFn-18 to 1 (or 2), I am able to set up the WB+/- button to do back button focusing without the problems outlined above.

I've cleared all Personal Functions, reset the camera's defaults, and re-installed the firmware (1.1.2), but the situation remains.

I'd like be able to use the * button instead of the WB+/- button. I have to be missing something.

Any suggestions?

->> I know there is a menu item that selects the "assist" focus points and I set mine to 1 or zero this sounds like it will fix your problem. I would check the manual to find how to change this setting.

->> Sounds to me like the button is getting stuck. That would explain your problem in the single shot mode and the AI servo mode. Maybe try cleaning the button or pressing it several time to clear any gunk out.

->> I appreciate the suggestions and ideas.

I'll have to look into the assist focus point suggestion.

I get the same results with both sets of buttons (landscape vs portrait), so I think I can rule out a dirty contact on one of them.
