Yet another Hard Drive question

->> I have a firewire WD 1Tb drive attached my 2007 iMac (OS 10.5.6). All of a sudden, it only copies 40MB worth of data before stopping and just spinning its wheels. The only way to stop the copy is to do a forced restart of the computer. It's also painfully slow to work off the drive, create new folders, change views from icon to list etc.
I don't think it's a computer problem since all of my other hard drives work fine. I'm trying to figure out if it's time to replace the WD drive (which is my video scratch drive). The drive is about two years old and only gets a few hours of use a week.
Any thoughts?

->> Hi Jack:
My first thought is that the cable is defective or the drive needs repair. Open Disk Utility and see if it needs repair. Try repairing permissions as well. How much disk space is available? Try updating to 10.5.7 as well.
Is the drive multi interface? Try using the USB 2.0 interface if so. If it is only a scratch disk, you may want to reformat it.

->> I've had similar problems in the past and it was due to the power source. I can't tell from your post above if the drive requires a separate power cable or if simply connecting it serves as the power source, but if you do need a power cord to run the drive then I would have that thing checked out.
I do know that sometimes a faulty power cord for the hard drive can present issues. Good luck! |

->> I recently had a drive fail with these same symptoms at the onset. I'd try and get what you can off the drive ASAP.
As Rich suggested, disk utility will tell you if something is up. |

->> Sadly, it appears I have a hosed hard drive. Running Apple's Disk Utility tells me there's a bad node and then Disk Utility quits. Breaking out Disk Warrior was just as futile. It quits as soon as hits that drive. I see another HD in my future.
thanks for the help.

->> It could be the case. If you have another case you might try that. If it doesn't have any irreplaceable files, try using disk utility and instead of repairing, click repartition. You want to choose one partition and make sure you select GUID. See if that resurrects it.
Depending on the drive, it may be covered under warranty. |
