Yellowstone NP Scanner Frequencies
Will Lester, Photographer
Ontario | CA | USA | Posted: 11:44 PM on 06.02.09
->> Looking for "active" frequencies within the park used by the National Park Service or park law enforcement. Generally park service employees are called to physically monitor areas within the park where bears, for example, are close to the road or trails. Would like to get the frequencies so I can go to those areas without driving all around the park and finding wildlife by luck. Anyone's help would be great.
Thanx, Will

->> I don't think you'll need a scanner; Moving around the park this time of year is pretty easy. Bear activity lately has been in Lamar Valley and just south of Mammoth. If you're coming from the north, head through Gardiner, Mont. There's an RV park where a lot of wildlife photographers hang out in the summer, and they're really plugged into the wildlife scene and will know where the wolves and bears are. I can't remember the RV park's name, but I bet if you just asked at a restaurant or gas station you'll be able to find it pretty quick.

If you make it down to Grand Teton National Park there has been grizzlies sighted around Oxbow Bend and in the Pacific Creek drainage, but grizzlies have also been spotted in the park as far south as Schwabaecher Landing (just north of Moose).

A good place to start. They have pretty active forums broken down by geographic area, so someone should be able to help out. Not sure if you have to be a premium subscriber to be a part of the forums.

->> Will, I have an interactive map on my site that allows folks to see where some of best places are traditionally for particular species in Yellowstone: http://www.maxwaugh.com/yellowstone/map.php

Also, you may be able to get more information on radio frequencies (used by Park personnel or the wolf watchers) by asking on the Yellowstone.net forums.

If you have more questions about shooting wildlife in the park, feel free to email me.

->> I use freqofnature.com

They are pretty much West Coast only but they too have a forum. I did a search for the Park Service:

http://freqofnature.com/index.php?m=Interior&p=National%20Parks

However, this was just for Parks in CA.

Good luck,

-Greg

Some discussion of encrypted digital but looks like most park ops are on analog freqs.
