Visa Pour L'Image?
Michael Sullivan, Photographer
Sheridan | WY | USA | Posted: 8:03 PM on 06.02.09
->> I'm planning on attending the Visa Pour L'Image Photo Festival in Perpignan, France at the end of August. It's my first time (both for the festival and France) and I'm hoping to touch base with any one that has experience with this. Looking to speak with and pick the brain of people that are going to the festival, that have been to the festival, any one out there that lives in France, has lived in France, etc.

I've got some general questions about the festival, getting around on the train system, hotels, etc. Also checking to see if any SS members are going and want to meet up at the festival for a beer.

If anyone would like to share their knowledge I can be reached through my sportsshooter page (Michael Sullivan living and working in Sheridan, WY). Thanks in advance.

Gray Matters: Jean Francois Leroy's vision
Jim Merithew went to Visa Pour L'Image to see the photographs and enjoy the festival.

Please check this out for some fun background info.

Most people fly into Barcelona and take a train to Perpignan (whose train station was once declared to be the "center of the universe" by Salvador Dali) or you can fly into Paris and train/drive down. It's a great town that loves photographers and the beginning of September (when Visa happens) is warm and sunny.

Bear in mind that during the month of August EVERYONE in France is on vacation and the traffic can be terrible.

Here's an interview I did with Jean Francois LeRoy a few years ago, He's the man behind Visa and it's very much his show.

->> I attended last year. This year I am doing LOOK3 instead. Like everyone is saying it is a great experience. But also like most festivals it is not really a place to show portfolios. I mean there are designated areas for reviews and the agency show room is a nice place to stop by. But it's just a great place for inspiration and to meet new people. If you go in with that attitude then you will have a great time.

I flew in to Barcelona like Jim said and I took the train up to Perpignan. Very easy. Once in Perpignan, it's also easy to get around. Try to get a hotel close to the events. I wasn't able to as I decided to go one day before I went. So I had to walk a decent distance every day.

Bring lots of business cards and start training for drinking plenty of wine now.

Enjoy.

Another good thing about "Visa Pour L'Iver Damage" is that, if your body on North American time the Get-up-at-2PM-start-drinking-at-9PM-finish-at-3AM schedule translates to up at 9AM, start at 3PM, finish at 9PM then off to bed...

->> Kevin - I find it odd that you say it's not the place to show portfolio's? In Europe it is THE place to show your work. Lots of photo editors are there from leading publications and agencies from all over the world - specifically to find new talent and/or get their hands on yet to be published material.
Honestly, I hate the whole "networking" thing- but ya gotta do it - and I must say that I have been a few times and have found it to be very worthwhile. I've always walked away feeling that it was money well spent. But to each his own. I guess for me - since I'm not a strong "self-promoter" - being able to go to one place and have the opportunity to make contact with so many industry heavy weights - and at the same time see some inspiring work - it just makes my life easier :-)

So, Michael - as others have said - book your room early - bring a pair of comfy shoes and take the time to prepare a nice book to show - and it's a great idea to have a few - so you can leave a couple behind with editors that you are particularly interested in working with.

Bonne chance!
