Repair or replace?
Justin Rumbach, Photo Editor, Photographer

->> I am wondering if it is time to replace one of our Canon 70-200 (non-IS) lens. This thing is almost 10 years old and has plenty of wear. A few days ago, the autofocus stopped working. When you press the autofocus button, the indicator light inside the camera lights up, but the lens doesn't respond.

Has anyone paid for a similar repair? Is it worth putting money into this lens or should I start shopping for a replacement? Is it possible that a simple clean and check could possibly solve the problem (I've got my fingers crossed that this is the right answer...)

Thanks!

Thing works like new now ;)

Once it's repaired, you may want to consider whether you should keep it. Again, if money is scarce, then you probably will want to carry on. If not, it's still has a lot of value and you should be able to sell it and buy a fresh copy.

I went through this debate recently myself.

->> Thanks for the replies - I think I will send it in for repair and keep an eye out for replacment as well.

Follow up question - does Canon do a standard clean and check on all equipment they receive for repair or do I need to include one of those coupons in the box with the lens?

->> Depending on the problem, Canon may not have the parts to service your lens. Hard to believe they can't repair their own lenses! Call before sending it in. You may have better luck with Mid State or another independent service provider. My 20 - 35 L ƒ2.8 cannot be repaired by Canon anymore. If the repair is more than $500, you might be better off to put that money towards a new lens.

->> Even though it's one of the oldest lenses on their list, CPS does still repair the 70-200/2.8L (non-IS). I would send it in--and do it quickly because being as old as it is, who knows when CPS might decide to drop it from their repair list. ;-)

And yes, CPS does a clean and check on every repair.

->> I had this problem with my 70-200f2.8L (non-IS). Mid-State Camera Repair, www.midstatecamerarepair.com replaced the circuit board for I believe less than US$200.

I had my lens back in 48hrs

->> Rich,

Canon does not sell the 20-35 f.28 anymore. The lens in question is still sold by Canon, therefore it's still a lens they service.

->> Nina,

Actually, you can take a full deduction in one year, up to $250,000 (the 2008 limit). It's call a section 179 expense. Again, consult your tax preparer.

Duane.
