->> Osamu,
when you say they don't recognize anything beyond an 8gb, does that mean it won't work?

->> I wonder if it's similar to the 4gb cards with the Canon 1D.

They work, but the camera only really 'sees' the first 1gb, though it seems to use up to the 2gb limit of that generation.

It considers the card full when it reaches 2gb, so though it works, it has only half capacity (which is why I got two additional 2gb Extreme III cards instead of another 4gb (which the 30D gets full use of.)

Those are compact flash cards, and I haven't tried an 8gb card in these cameras yet, but I also shoot video, and over the weekend a company I work with picked up two 8gb Memory Sticks. Since it also works in my card reader, I plan on using it to copy a 7.5 gb video file to a backup computer, so I can work on the original, rather than split it in two parts to put on DVD. (We don't have blu-ray, and I haven't tried a dual-layer DVD yet.)

There was a long time that I kept buying more 2gb cards instead of 4gb cards because I didn't want to have all my photos on one card in case of corruption.

Since I am now happy with current capacity, I doubt that I'll be buying more 8gb compact flash cards, but may well buy another Memory Stick, and if the price is within budget I would buy a 16 gb.

->> Hi Debra.

I'm using Transcend 16GB UDMA 300x cards and the SanDisk FW 800 card reader with a MacBook Pro, and they are great. I researched these cards on Rob Galbraith's site, and they perform very well, especially ingesting a shoot (great for meeting deadlines). They run about $150 a piece these days. Ideal for shooting RAW or just never having to change cards for an entire event (with a pair in a D3 - full rez files).

Cheers!

- Ed.

->> Osamu...I frequently shoot with 12GB cards on a D300 and D700. Are you trying to tell me that I'm only getting 8GB worth of recognized space? I don't think that's true.

I don't have time to test shoot 12GB worth of images so what other way can we determine if what you're saying is a fact?

->> Debra, when I put my SanDisk Extreme III into my D700, the camera says, "No memory card." The same thing happens to my D300 as well.

D700's User's Manual, page 390 "Approved Memory Cards," shows a list of tested and approved cards (SanDisk and Lexar only). And the Extreme III 12GB is not included.

Delane, what kind of cards are you using? I doubt your cameras are treating your 12GB cards as 8GB, but since I have only SanDisk cards, I have no idea.

->> Delane............I was also confused by Osamu's comment about the D300 not recognizing any thing above 8 gigs. I put in an 8 gig card and the image counter tells me I have 394 RAW images I can shoot. I put in a 16 gig and the counter tells me I have 788 images.
Maybee my D300 is just smarter, but that sure seems like recognition to me........God Spede.........gym

->> I use 12 gb SanDisk cards all the time. I have a few 8's and a bunch of 4's. The 2's pretty much stay in the case and/or get used in point & shoots.

Remember you don't have to fill them to change cards. Bigger cards give you the added convenience of changing cards when the best opportunity comes along and not just when you are running out of space.

Prefer having 8GB Extreme IVs in both slots on the D3 though.

just curious why you prefer 2 8gb cards in the D3?
