| ->> I'm doing a "Trash the Dress" shoot in Knoxville next week. I received an e-mail from the client saying that the dress top will not zip up anymore due to post-marriage enhancements. Does anybody know of an item that can help this problem? I have "Googled" for an answer, but to no avail. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

->> Joshua -
I've never worn a bridal gown, but I'd suspect that stores that sell the things would have an idea how to help a bride whose figure shall we say changes... when there isn't time for a final fitting. Just like an airline with a seatbelt extender, there's gotta be a comparable dress item
I don't think a batch of largely sports oriented, skewed to the male end of the gene pool photogs is going to be the best informed batch of folks to ask this question.
Unless, of course there is beer involved. |

->> Hey Dave,
I knew that SportsShooter might not be my best source, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Maybe someone has faced a similar problem. Who knows, maybe someone out in SS land has gone out and looked for pants extenders to go along with all the beer, and stumbled upon just the item I can't seem to find online. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll dig a little deeper into the local bridal store offerings. |

->> Here are some ideas that might work. They have what is called Bra Extenders. It's the hook on one side and the eye on the other. You could sew these on the dress (as many as need) to get it closed, or you could have tiny "button holes" put on the back and put a nice lace thru them to lace up the back.
Good Luck! |

->> Hi Joshua,
Yes, there are pants extenders and collar extenders that help men fit into tuxedos and shirts from their thinner days, but the clothing world isn't so simple for women in many ways. I'm no expert, but I doubt you'd find any mass-market product to do what you need and still look ok. Perhaps it's cynicism from having to trudge through three floors and six departments (casual, business, petite casual, designer,"today's woman," "on the town", etc.) of the same store just to find a simple blue skirt....grrr...
But back to your issue:
Perhaps your best bet is to ask the bride to bring the dress to a good tailor. They can work wonders. Over the years I've asked tailors to help make various dresses fit, and a good one can always come up with some solution. Granted, making something bigger is a heck of a lot trickier than making something smaller, but it's worth a try. What looks impossible to us mere mortals is all in a day's work for a tailor.
The odds may be in your favor -- because you only need the dress for one photo session, the alteration doesn't have to stand up to excessive use. If you're trashing the dress anyway, the tailor could perhaps use techniques he/she wouldn't otherwise try. Plus if you're willing to restrict your photo angles a bit and not highlight the repaired area, you may make it that much more possible.
I know very little about how such an alteration would work, but if I had to guess, I'd figure a tailor could open up the side seams and possibly add a triangular ribbon of fabric to each side, under the arms, to expand the bodice area.
(now's the part where 1/3 of the readers say "I never thought I'd read the word "bodice" on sportsshooter.com", 1/3 google the term, and 1/3 just giggle at the mention of it and move on....grin...)
Good luck.
Domestic-skills impaired yet trying to be helpful,

->> Rhonda and Shelley,
Thank you both for your ideas. I think between the three different ideas tossed out there, we can get one to work. Thanks again! |

->> Used heavy clamps(rear of dress) on bustier clients when I did glamour portraits many years ago.
Depending on how it looks, you could try that. It would limit the kinds of photos you would be able to take. |
