->> So I'm looking to upgrade from a well worn Canon 30D to something nice. After renting the 50D, I realized I really need something new. But with the buzz with the Mark III I have my doubts, but any track an field shooters out there have any thoughts on this? Can someone recommend a body?

->> Nikon D3.
All depends on your lens arsenal. Lots of Canon glass, ride it out, Canon should eventually fix the issues it's been two years how much longer could it be?
Not a lot of Canon glass make the switch now,or check in with NPS, I know a few Canon photographers that contacted Nikon and they offered them trade in value for their Canon gear and they made the switch. Not at the retail level this is through NPS. |

->> Yes David, you owe it to yourself to try out the Nikon gear. I switched a few years ago after waiting over a year for the 40D to come out. I had been using the 20D, but the 30D wasn't much of an upgrade. I ended up getting a D200 and a D80 for a back-up. Now I run a D700 and D90 and couldn't be happier.
In the early 90's, I switched from Nikon to Canon after a loaner from Canon convinced me that their AF was superior to anything Nikon had. Now Nikon has made some truly amazing cameras with the D700 and D3. FYI, with the MB D10 grip and an EL4 battery, you can get 8 fps and the battery lasts all day. |

->> The IIn's are superb work-horses. Fast, reliable auto focus, good weather sealing and nice picture quality.

->> Hey, I've been using both the IIN and MK III... They both work wonderfully. Either one would be a good choice...

->> Hi David,
Having shot about 20 meets this year with different Canon gear every time it seemed, (my 5dmk2 was in and out of the shop for most of the summer so I had various loaners) I have come to a few conclusions.
For horizontal jumps the 5D mk2 never misses but it is not as good on the track. It does not acquire the next runner fast enough if you are trying to shoot more than 1 lane. Otherwise on the track I have found the 1Ds mk2 or the 1dmk2 to be best although I have not tried a mk2n. The 1d mk3 and 1ds mk3 are great in the evening, under the lights or on dull cloudy days but are useless when it is sunny. You might get a 10-20% in focus rate on a sunny day. Totally unacceptable.
If I did not have a 200 f1.8 and a 400 2.8 I would switch to Nikon. If you have too much invested in Canon then I would stay with the Mk 2 series or wait for whatever comes next. I imagine they will have something by next summer.
Geoff

->> The T&F photos on my profile were all taken with a $900 1D2. I would prefer a 1D2N for the screen and better jpeg output, but with the 7D being only $200 more than a used four year old camera. I might go that route since you probably already have 1.6x lenses.

->> I used a mk III and a 50d at the west regionals and pac 10 championships this past spring, and all went good. This was with 300 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 glass.

->> They man owns Canon gear and probably doesn't want to take a bath on trade in values. I agree with several others, the Mark IIN is a solid workhorse as was the 1D before it. In addition, it never had the issues the Mark III had. I love my Nikon gear, but I also enjoyed using Canon when I was a canon shooter.

->> I'd prefer not to say. He was very matter of fact in bringing it up in conversation, saying it was why we are starting to see lower prices on used Mark IIIs, but I'm not sure he would feel comfortable with me attributing the info to him by name.

->> That doesn't surprise me with the Olympics just around the corner. I'm guessing Canon wants to see more canon bodies at the Olympics this time. If a new MKIV came out next month or so that would give time for people to test and report on it.
