A Newbie's Internet Domain Questions..
William Maner, Photographer

->> To the more knowledgeable SS members...

I'd like to branch out into the photography world. I've read quite a bit of stuff about domains and web sites.

I'm an old-timer and am not up to speed on what's going on with domain registrations..

I want to register a name, but I see all sorts of options about public or private registrations, different kinds of listing registrations, etc.. I'm even more confused than I was this morning..

What would be the basic ABC's to registering a domain? I'm not really certain about how I might tailor the features of--for lack of a better way to put it--domain name management.

I know I probably raised a lot more questions than I intended, but I would welcome the suggestions that you'd have for a novice at setting up a domain.

The recent SS article by Brian Blanco is what got me going.

Brian wrote:

....."Well as it turned out the domain name was easy. A quick trip to Google Apps and
http://www.brianblanco.com was purchased for the low, low price of $10.00."..

Did Brian register his domain without any other options or frills? More details would have been helpful for novices such as myself...

Thanks in advance for your responses. I appreciate your patience and understanding...

->> Hi William. In addition to my photography business, I also own a technology consulting company. We host websites and provide domain registration. The process is not complex. First you need to find a registrar through which you can buy a domain name. GoDaddy.com is a good choice. They have a simple online system. Visit their website www.godaddy.com and click "create account". An account is not required to search for a domain name, but it is required to purchase one. Once you have purchased a domain name, you can manage it from within their domain manager. That option is under "domains" and then "my domains". Private registration refers to keeping the public information about your domain name safe from anyone to review. Each registrar provides a service called "Whois". Through the whois, you can look up a domain name and see the contacts of that domain name. Each domain has a registrant, administrative, technical and billing contact. They can be the same or unique. Private registration is usually an extra fee to withhold your information from the public whois information search.

Once you have registered a domain name, you need a company to host that for you. GoDaddy hosts websites and provides some online website building tools. Keep in mind that GoDaddy is not required to host your website. You can host your website with any company in the world. You can also redirect your website to any resource such as PhotoShelter, Zenfolio, etc. These capabilities are available from within the domain manager on GoDaddy's website.

I hope this helps to get you started.

->> Thanks for the info Michael..

I just feel so lost with all the new capabilities available to folks these days.. Sometimes I come away feeling like roadkill on the Information Super Highway..

I see that you are in Lubbock.. I was in Lubbock the first week in January to visit relatives.. It was a much belated trip.. Been just over 33 years since I'd last been out that way.. I hope to go back much sooner this time around..

->> Say Michael:

I registered my domain name through GoDaddy, and used Google Apps to build a site.

Now I want to "switch" things so that when you type in my url it goes directly to my PhotoShelter site. Can I just transfer (for lack of a better word) what I've done via Google Apps to PhotoShelter somewhow?

Or do I need to rebuild it from the ground up?

www.timvizerphotography.com is the Google Apps site

Thanks, Tim

I also concur....GoDaddy.com has been very helpful when I needed a "warm body" on the telephone.

At one point last year, I was running three other websites for clients. GoDaddy was always easy to deal with.

->> Tim,

I am not familiar with GoDaddy's back-end but what you want to do is achievable. I use 1&1 so I'm sure it is a little different.

You need to go into your GoDaddy administration and look for your domain controls. Find the destination controls for that domain and set it to "forward" and enter your photoshelter site as the URL.

This will allow people to type
http://www.timvizerphotography.com and take them straight to your photoshelter page. It will completely override your Google page and JUST show your photoshelter page.

Hope that makes sense.

->> This is not quite on-topic, but I don't think it warrants a whole new thread. It does relate to, and will be helpful to the original post though.

When you use a URL gripper and forwarding service, let's say from godaddy, do search engines only see the original domain name on the forwarding page on godaddy, or do they also trawl on the actual pages to where you have your website hosted?

I use dreamhost as my server. I'd recommend them too as a hosting service.
